Current Options in Platelet Function Testing
The American Journal of Cardiology, 2006The variable response to antiplatelet therapy has led to the use of platelet function tests to monitor the effects of antiplatelet drugs in cardiovascular diseases. The goal is to guide antiplatelet therapy to the optimal dose for the prevention or treatment of thrombosis while minimizing hemorrhagic side effects.

Platelet function testing: state of the art
Expert Review of Cardiovascular Therapy, 2007Platelet function testing has evolved from crude tests, such as the bleeding time, to tests that permit a relatively sophisticated evaluation of platelet activity. Nonetheless, these tests are hampered by lack of specificity and sensitivity, and poor standardization of methods and techniques.

Application of platelet function testing to the bedside
Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2010SummaryThe ability to test platelet reactivity in clinical practice could help in making informed decisions on both initiation and titration of anti-platelet drug therapies. However, many barriers still remain to the effective implementation of such techniques. Many tests used in the research literature are not yet available for practical, clinical use.

Platelet Function Tests in Bleeding Disorders
Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, 2016Functional disorders of platelets can involve any aspect of platelet physiology, with many different effects or outcomes. These include platelet numbers (thrombocytosis or thrombocytopenia); changes in platelet production or destruction, or capture to the liver (Ashwell receptor); altered adhesion to vascular injury sites and/or influence on hemostasis

Platelet Function Testing in Atherothrombotic Disease
Current Pharmaceutical Design, 2012Platelet function testing was introduced more than a century ago with the invention of bleeding time; a test which has now been replaced by more accurate methods. Light transmittance aggregometry is traditionally regarded as the gold standard for evaluating platelet function.

Platelet Function Testing: Quality Assurance
Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, 2007Platelet function tests are widely used for the diagnosis of platelet disorders. In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of platelet function tests to monitor antiplatelet drug therapy. Quality assurance is important to optimize the performance of laboratory assays but it has not been widely applied to platelet function tests ...

The Effect of Prednisone on Platelet Function Tests
Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1982Ivy bleeding time, capillary fragility, threshold ADP concentration for secondary platelet aggregation and platelet adhesiveness were found to be unchanged by 2 d and 6 weeks of treatment with prednisone in 22 consecutive patients with collagen or haematological diseases.

The Clinical Relevance of Platelet Function Tests
British Journal of Haematology, 1972Summary.The increasingly used tests of platelet function have been briefly reviewed and an attempt has been made to correlate the result of these tests with their clinical significance. It may be said that the platelet count and bleeding time are still the most important information for the clinician.

Point-of-Care Platelet Function Testing
Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 2007Cardiopulmonary bypass has unpredictably deleterious effects on platelet function. Patients with cardiovascular disease have treatments aimed at reducing platelet aggregation and are at risk of excessive bleeding during surgery. Transfusion of blood products, particularly platelets, probably causes increased morbidity and mortality.

Platelet function testing in pediatric patients
Expert Review of Hematology, 2017Platelets play a key role in primary hemostasis and are also intricately linked to secondary hemostasis. Investigation of platelet function in children, especially in neonates, is seriously challenged by the volumes required to perform the majority of platelet function tests and due to the lack of standardization of these tests for use in children ...
