Accurate Processing of Human Pre-rRNA In Vitro [PDF]
We report here that the mature 5' terminus of human 18S rRNA is generated in vitro by a two-step processing reaction. In the first step, SP6 transcripts were specifically cleaved in HeLa cell nucleolar extract at three positions near the external transcribed spacer (ETS)-18S boundary.

Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide Stress on the Nucleolar Redox Environment and Pre-rRNA Maturation
Identifying biologically relevant molecular targets of oxidative stress may provide new insights into disease mechanisms and accelerate development of novel biomarkers. Ribosome biogenesis is a fundamental prerequisite for cellular protein synthesis, but

Small Nucleolar RNAs and Pre-rRNA Processing in Plants [PDF]
Messenger RNA (mRNA) translation and thereby gene expression depend on the cell's ability to produce vast numbers of ribosomes, the major component of the translational machinery. The complexity inherent in the production of ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), the key RNA components of the ribosome ...

SSB-1 of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a nucleolar-specific, silver-binding protein that is associated with the snR10 and snR11 small nuclear RNAs [PDF]
SSB-1, the yeast single-strand RNA-binding protein, is demonstrated to be a yeast nucleolar-specific, silver-binding protein. In double-label immunofluorescence microscopy experiments antibodies to two other nucleolar proteins, RNA Pol I 190-kD and ...

A functional interface at the rDNA connects rRNA synthesis, pre-rRNA processing and nucleolar surveillance in budding yeast. [PDF]
Ribogenesis is a multistep error-prone process that is actively monitored by quality control mechanisms. How ribosomal RNA synthesis, pre-rRNA processing and nucleolar surveillance are integrated is unclear.

Maturation of the 90S pre-ribosome requires Mrd1 dependent U3 snoRNA and 35S pre-rRNA structural rearrangements [PDF]
In eukaryotes, ribosome biogenesis requires folding and assembly of the precursor rRNA (pre-rRNA) with a large number of proteins and snoRNPs into huge RNA-protein complexes. In spite of intense genetic, biochemical and high-resolution cryo-EM studies in

snR30/U17 is a highly conserved H/ACA RNA that is required for maturation of the small ribosomal subunit in eukaryotes. By base-pairing to the expansion segment 6 (ES6) of 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), the snR30 H/ACA Ribonucleoprotein (RNP) indirectly ...
