Metabolization of Flavan‐3‐ol Oligomers by Eggerthella lenta, a Human Gut Bacterium
Molecular Nutrition &Food Research, Volume 70, Issue 19, 15 October 2026.Novel human gut bacterial strains were isolated and characterized for their ability to metabolize flavan‐3‐ols. While Eggerthella lenta and Flavonifractor plautii metabolized flavan‐3‐ol monomers, only E. lenta converted B‐ and A‐type procyanidins, demonstrating that this gut bacterium can metabolize flavan‐3‐ol oligomers.
