Update on Procalcitonin Measurements [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Laboratory Medicine, 2014
Procalcitonin (PCT) is used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock. At the same time, PCT has also been used to guide antibiotic therapy. This review outlines the main indications for PCT measurement and points out possible pitfalls.

Overruling of Procalcitonin-Guided Antibiotics for Lower Respiratory Tract Infections in Primary Care: Ancillary Study of a Randomized Controlled Trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Background: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in primary care are a promising target for antibiotic stewardship. A clinical trial in Switzerland showed a large decrease in antibiotic prescriptions with procalcitonin guidance (cut-off < 0.25 µg/L)

Triglyceride‐Glucose Index‐Based Nomogram for Predicting Short‐Term Mortality in Sepsis Patients

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The triglyceride‐glucose (TyG) index, a marker of insulin resistance, is associated with outcomes in critical illness; however, its predictive role for 28‐day mortality in Asian patients with sepsis has not been established. To address this, the current investigation was designed to evaluate its prognostic significance and to construct a risk ...

Procalcitonin: seeking a niche [PDF]

open access: yesCritical Care, 2009
For over a decade there has been intense interest given to the role of procalcitonin in the diagnosis and management of sepsis in critically ill patients. Early opinions strongly supported the diagnostic role but data accumulating from numerous subsequent studies are less supportive, even when used in very selective settings.

Procalcitonin as biomarker of antibiotic effectivity in communityacquired pneumonia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Major therapy for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is antibiotics. Procalcitonin used as the measure of antibioticseffectiveness. Procalcitonin is specific biomarker that elevates in acute bacterial infection.

Synovial interleukin‐6 point‐of‐care testing, alone and combined with D‐dimer, supports rapid diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Data on the reliability of point‐of‐care (POC) tests for the rapid diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) using synovial fluid (SF) D‐dimer (DD), interleukin 6 (IL‐6) and procalcitonin (PCT) are limited. This study aimed to address this issue by evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of POC tests for SF DD, IL‐6 and PCT in ...

Procalcitonin as an acute phase marker [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical Biochemistry, 2001
Procalcitonin is a 14-kDa protein encoded by the Calc-I gene along with calcitonin and katacalcin. The function and regulation of this protein are quite different from those of the other gene products. Blood concentrations of procalcitonin are increased in systemic inflammation, especially when this is caused by bacterial infection.

Target product profile for a diagnostic assay to differentiate between bacterial and non-bacterial infections and reduce antimicrobial overuse in resource-limited settings: an expert consensus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Acute fever is one of the most common presenting symptoms globally. In order to reduce the empiric use of antimicrobial drugs and improve outcomes, it is essential to improve diagnostic capabilities.

Influence of patient factors on target plasma volume treated attainment rate during double filtration plasmapheresis in patients with hypertriglyceridemic acute pancreatitis

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction This study aims to investigate patient factors affecting the rate of plasma volume target attained in hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis (HTG‐AP) patients undergoing double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP). Methods A retrospective analysis of 82 HTG‐AP‐interpreted patients from January 2019 to April 2024 compared target plasma ...
