Canonical and non‐canonical functions of proteins regulating mitochondrial dynamics in mammalian physiology

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that continuously remodel their architecture through coordinated cycles of fusion and fission. This review examines the four key GTPases that orchestrate mitochondrial dynamics in mammals: MFN1, MFN2, OPA1, and DRP1.

Proopiomelanocortin Gene Product Regulation in Keratinocytes

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 1996
Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is the precursor for adrenocorticotropic hormone, melanocyte-stimulating hormones, beta-lipotropic hormone (beta LPH), and beta endorphin. These peptides can function as neurotransmitters, modulate immune responses, and affect melanogenesis. We investigated POMC expression and protein processing in normal human keratinocytes.

The role of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurones in feeding behaviour

open access: yesNutrition & Metabolism, 2007
The precursor protein, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), produces many biologically active peptides via a series of enzymatic steps in a tissue-specific manner, yielding the melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSHs), corticotrophin (ACTH) and β-endorphin.

The role of pro-opiomelanocortin in the ACTH–cortisol dissociation of sepsis

open access: yesCritical Care, 2021
Background Sepsis is typically hallmarked by high plasma (free) cortisol and suppressed cortisol breakdown, while plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is not increased, referred to as ‘ACTH–cortisol dissociation.’ We hypothesized that sepsis acutely

Intracerebroventricular Catalase Reduces Hepatic Insulin Sensitivity and Increases Responses to Hypoglycemia in Rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Specialized metabolic-sensors in the hypothalamus regulate blood glucose levels by influencing hepatic glucose output and hypoglycemic counter regulatory responses.

SemaGBA: A System Dynamics Model of the Semaglutide‐Responsive Gut‐Brain Axis A Model of How the Brain and Semaglutide Regulate Appetite and Weight

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 28, Issue 6, Page 5184-5194, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Aims Semaglutide is a GLP‐1 receptor agonist for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Its clinical effects are well established, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to use computational modelling to generate hypotheses about semaglutide's long‐term metabolic (body weight, net energy intake, blood glucose ...

The human adrenal cortex: growth control and disorders

open access: yesClinics, 2018
This review summarizes key knowledge regarding the development, growth, and growth disorders of the adrenal cortex from a molecular perspective. The adrenal gland consists of two distinct regions: the cortex and the medulla.

Casein kinase 1α is required to maintain murine hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin expression

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: Hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neuron development is considered to play an essential role in the development of obesity. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Human fur gene encodes a yeast KEX2-like endoprotease that cleaves pro-beta-NGF in vivo. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
Extracts from BSC-40 cells infected with vaccinia recombinants expressing either the yeast KEX2 prohormone endoprotease or a human structural homologue (fur gene product) contained an elevated level of a membrane-associated endoproteolytic activity that ...

Mutations of the BRAF gene in human cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Cancers arise owing to the accumulation of mutations in critical genes that alter normal programmes of cell proliferation, differentiation and death. As the first stage of a systematic genome-wide screen for these genes, we have prioritized for analysis ...
