Neuroprotective role of pyrroloquinoline quinone in folate deficiency-induced blood-brain barrier disruption

open access: yesFluids and Barriers of the CNS
Healthy neurodevelopment requires adequate folates (vitamin B9), which are critical for key biosynthetic and homeostatic processes in the central nervous system (CNS).

Vitamin B12‐Functionalized Nanogels for pH‐, and Redox‐Responsive Doxorubicin Delivery

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
A polymerizable 5′‐modified vitamin B12‐monomer enables the covalent incorporation of B12 into pH‐ and redox‐responsive nanogels for targeted doxorubicin delivery. The nanogels exhibit glutathione‐triggered drug release, potent antiproliferative activity against HT‐29 cancer cells, and strongly reduced cytotoxicity toward healthy cells.

Proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT): molecular cloning, tissue expression patterns and the effects of dietary folate supplementation on mRNA expression in laying hens

open access: yes
1. The aim was to investigate the molecular characterisation and effects of dietary folate supplementation on mRNA concentrations of the proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT) in chicken. 2.

Synthesis and Biological Activity of 6-Substituted Pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine Thienoyl Regioisomers as Inhibitors of de Novo Purine Biosynthesis with Selectivity for Cellular Uptake by High Affinity Folate Receptors and the Proton-Coupled Folate Transporter over the Reduced Folate Carrier

open access: yes, 2016
We previously reported the selective transport of classical 2-amino-4-oxo-6-substituted pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidines with a thienoyl-for-benzoyl-substituted side chain and a three- (3a) and four-carbon (3b) bridge.

Folate catabolites in spot urine as non-invasive biomarkers of folate status during habitual intake and folic acid supplementation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Folate status, as reflected by red blood cell (RCF) and plasma folates (PF), is related to health and disease risk. Folate degradation products para-aminobenzoylglutamate (pABG) and para-acetamidobenzoylglutamate (apABG) in 24 hour urine have recently ...

Folate Transport and One-Carbon Metabolism in Targeted Therapies of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

open access: yes, 2021
New therapies are urgently needed for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), the most lethal gynecologic malignancy. To identify new approaches for targeting EOC, metabolic vulnerabilities must be discovered and strategies for the selective delivery of ...

Abstract 2179: Targeted delivery of nanoparticulate cytochrome c into GL261 glioma cells through the proton-coupled folate transporter

open access: yes, 2017
In this study we identified the proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT) as a route for targeted delivery of drugs to glioma cells. Using the techniques of confocal imaging, western blotting, and siRNA knockdown against the PCFT (encoded by the SLC46A1 ...

Identification of Transport-critical Residues in a Folate Transporter from the Folate-Biopterin Transporter (FBT) Family* [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The Synechocystis Slr0642 protein and its plastidial Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) ortholog At2g32040 belong to the folate-biopterin transporter (FBT) family within the major facilitator superfamily. Both proteins transport folates when expressed in

Vitamin D3 and its nuclear receptor increase the expression and activity of the human proton-coupled folate transporter

open access: yes, 2009
Folates are essential for nucleic acid synthesis and required particularly in rapidly proliferating tissues, such as intestinal epithelium and hemopoietic cells.
