Acute Psychological Stress Modulates the Expression of Enzymes Involved in the Kynurenine Pathway throughout Corticolimbic Circuits in Adult Male Rats

open access: yesNeural Plasticity, 2016
Tryptophan is an essential dietary amino acid that is necessary for protein synthesis, but also serves as the precursor for serotonin. However, in addition to these biological functions, tryptophan also serves as a precursor for the kynurenine pathway ...

Modulation of Enzyme Activity in the Kynurenine Pathway by Kynurenine Monooxygenase Inhibition

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences, 2019
The kynurenine pathway is the major route for tryptophan metabolism in mammals. Several of the metabolites in the kynurenine pathway, however, are potentially toxic, particularly 3-hydroxykynurenine, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid, and quinolinic acid ...

Neural Correlates of Peripheral Inflammation in Major Depressive Disorder and Their Transcriptomic Architecture, Neurochemical Basis, and Behavioral Relevance

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 46, Issue 14, 01 October 2025.
Study design and analysis pipeline. First, we adopted fMRI and DTI to assess gray matter function and white matter integrity, whose associations with serum CRP levels were investigated in a large sample of MDD patients. Second, we examined the spatial relationships of the identified neural correlates of CRP with transcriptome, neurotransmitter, and ...

Biochemical characterization of quinolinic acid phosphoribosyltransferase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and inhibition of its activity by pyrazinamide. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Quinolinic acid phosphoribosyltransferase (QAPRTase, EC 2.4.2.19) is a key enzyme in the de novo pathway of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) biosynthesis and a target for the development of new anti-tuberculosis drugs.

A Metabolite Score of Unintentional Weight Loss Explained a Substantial Proportion of Associated Mortality and Mobility Limitation Risk in a Biracial Older Cohort

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 24, Issue 10, October 2025.
A metabolite‐based score for short‐term unintentional weight loss was independently associated with mortality and mobility limitation risks in healthy older adults. It accounted for over 20% of the excess risk linked to unintentional weight loss, independent of lifestyle and medical history, suggesting a shared metabolic mechanism that remains ...

Can IDO activity predict primary resistance to anti-PD-1 treatment in NSCLC?

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine, 2018
Background Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized the treatment paradigm of highly lethal malignancies like advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), demonstrating long-term tumour control and extended patient survival.

Is quinolinic acid involved in etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia? [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, 2003
Retroviruses have been proposed as one of the infectious agents involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. They can cause neuronal death by endogenous toxin(s), such as quinolinic acid (QUIN), released by virus‐activated brain macrophages/microglia. QUIN is an endogenous excitotoxin, with an affinity at specific NMDA‐R heteromers.

Metabolome Profiling of Yokukansan in Preventing Postoperative Delirium in Elderly Cancer Patients: A Reverse Translational Study

open access: yesPsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, Volume 79, Issue 10, Page 685-696, October 2025.
Aims Postoperative delirium (PD) is a common and severe complication in older adult patients undergoing invasive cancer resections. This study explored the plasma metabolome associated with PD and evaluated the efficacy of Yokukansan (YKS), a traditional Japanese Kampo medicine, in preventing PD.

Nicotinamide N‐methyltransferase inhibition improves limb function in experimental peripheral artery disease

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 13, Issue 20, October 2025.
Abstract Peripheral artery disease (PAD) impairs limb perfusion, walking ability, and increases the risk of amputation. Although current therapies reduce cardiovascular events, few interventions improve skeletal muscle function in PAD. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) metabolism is disrupted in PAD.
