The biliary epithelial cells (cholangiocytes) in the liver originate from undifferentiated liver parenchymal cells (hepatoblasts) that are located adjacent to the portal vein. This differentiation process is driven by Notch signaling, which is recognized

Notch2 and Notch3 function together to regulate vascular smooth muscle development. [PDF]
Notch signaling has been implicated in the regulation of smooth muscle differentiation, but the precise role of Notch receptors is ill defined. Although Notch3 receptor expression is high in smooth muscle, Notch3 mutant mice are viable and display only ...

Role of Notch Signaling Pathway in Glioblastoma Pathogenesis
Notch signaling is an evolutionarily conserved pathway that regulates important biological processes, such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, self-renewal, and differentiation. In mammals, Notch signaling is composed of four receptors (Notch1–4)

Notch Receptor Activation Inhibits Oligodendrocyte Differentiation [PDF]
In this study, we show that oligodendrocyte differentiation is powerfully inhibited by activation of the Notch pathway. Oligodendrocytes and their precursors in the developing rat optic nerve express Notch1 receptors and, at the same time, retinal ganglion cells express Jagged1, a ligand of the Notch1 receptor, along their axons.

Notching on cancer’s door: Notch signaling in brain tumors
Notch receptors play an essential role in the regulation of central cellular processes during embryonic and postnatal development. The mammalian genome encodes for four Notch paralogs (Notch 1-4), which are activated by three Delta-like (Dll1/3/4) and ...

Photon-based radiotherapy upregulates Notch signaling in cancer, leading to the acquisition of the stem cell phenotype and induction of invasion/migration, which contributes to the development of resistance to therapy.

Mechanisms of Notch signaling: a simple logic deployed in time and space
Most cells in our body communicate during development and throughout life via Notch receptors and their ligands. Notch receptors relay information from the cell surface to the genome via a very simple mechanism, yet Notch plays multiple roles in ...

Notch and the Regulation of Osteoclast Differentiation and Function
Notch 1 through 4 are transmembrane receptors that play a pivotal role in cell differentiation and function; this review addresses the role of Notch signaling in osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. Notch receptors are activated following interactions

Redundant Notch1 and Notch2 signaling is necessary for IFNγ secretion by T helper 1 cells during infection with Leishmania major. [PDF]
The protective immune response to intracellular parasites involves in most cases the differentiation of IFNγ-secreting CD4(+) T helper (Th) 1 cells.

Notch Signaling Activation as a Hallmark for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Subtype
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subgroup of 15%-20% of diagnosed breast cancer patients. It is generally considered to be the most difficult breast cancer subtype to deal with, due to the lack of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor ...
