ABSTRACT Sickle cell disease (SCD) is characterized by both acute and chronic complications. The clinical manifestation of these complications differs between genotypes. Given the large amount of research already published, this systematic review aims to offer a complete overview of types of sickle cell complications between adults in the most common ...

Mathematical models of repopulation and reoxygenation in radiotherapy
Mathematical models of the effect of ionizing radiation on tumours have not, so far, received general acceptance, and Wheldon (1989) warns of the dangers of over-generalization. Nevertheless, the construction of models may have a certain value, in that we are forced to define our assumptions with clarity. It is interesting to compare two

Ubiquitin and ubiquitin‐like modifications in the endoplasmic reticulum stress response
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress activates various proteostasis control processes, including the unfolded protein response, ribosome‐associated quality control, and ER‐associated degradation. Ubiquitin and ubiquitin‐like modifications dynamically regulate these processes to determine cell fate, promoting adaptation or inducing cell death.

This scheme illustrates the main results of the present study showing an increase in circulating free fatty acids (FFA) that are likely to be related to several mechanisms like decrease in FFA insulin sensitivity and increase in FFA production. Significant changes are labelled in white, and non‐significant or hypothesis are labelled in pale green ...

ABSTRACT Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a global health problem with significant long‐term harm if the prognosis is poor. Dual‐specificity phosphatase 2 (DUSP2) is involved in key regulatory pathways in several disease processes, but its function in renal pathophysiology is unclear.

Down-regulation of NDRG1 promotes migration of cancer cells during reoxygenation.
One characteristic of tumor microenvironment is oxygen fluctuation, which results from hyper-proliferation and abnormal metabolism of tumor cells as well as disorganized neo-vasculature. Reoxygenation of tumors can induce oxidative stress, which leads to

Substrate‐specific mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolomic profiles in type 2 diabetic rat hearts
Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) greatly alters cardiac fuel handling, yet how mitochondrial function adapts to the diabetic substrate environment remains unclear. This study investigated substrate‐specific cardiac mitochondrial bioenergetics from a T2D rat model induced by a high‐fat diet and low‐dose streptozotocin.

Abstract figure legend Placental mitochondrial adaptation to gestational hypoxia. Hypoxic pregnancy in sheep increases placental insulin like growth factor 2 (IGF2) signalling (1), which is associated with a shift in capacity away from β‐oxidation (2) and complex I‐mediated respiration (3), while maintaining total oxidative phosphorylation capacity (4).
