The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Comparative acyl specificities for transfer and selective uptake of high density lipoprotein cholesteryl esters

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1991
This study compares the specificities of selective uptake and transfer mediated by plasma cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) for various species of cholesteryl esters in high density lipoproteins (HDL). [3H]Cholesterol was esterified with a series

Arousal enhances [14C]2-deoxyglucose uptake in four forebrain areas of the zebra finch

open access: yes, 1986
Bischof H-J, Herrmann K. Arousal enhances [14C]2-deoxyglucose uptake in four forebrain areas of the zebra finch. Behavioural Brain Research. 1986;21(3):215-221.The activity pattern of the forebrain of male zebra finches was investigated by the [14C]2 ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Regulation of the selective uptake of cholesteryl esters from high density lipoproteins by sphingomyelin

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2005
Although sphingomyelin (SM) is a major phospholipid in lipoproteins as well as in the membrane rafts where the scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) is localized, its possible role in the selective uptake of cholesteryl ester (CE) by the SR-BI ...

Probucol increases the selective uptake of HDL cholesterol esters by Hep G2 human hepatoma cells.

open access: yes, 1992
A previous study in rats showed that even though probucol substantially lowers high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, near-normal mass transport of HDL cholesterol esters (CE) to the liver is maintained by the induction of "selective" (direct) uptake of ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Hepatic lipase promotes the selective uptake of high density lipoprotein-cholesteryl esters via the scavenger receptor B1

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1999
Hepatic lipase (HL) plays a major role in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) metabolism both as a lipolytic enzyme and as a ligand. To investigate whether HL enhances the uptake of HDL-cholesteryl ester (CE) via the newly described scavenger receptor BI (SR ...

Parvovirus B19 uptake is a highly selective process controlled by VP1u, a novel determinant of viral tropism

open access: yes, 2013
The VP1 unique region (VP1u) of human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is the immunodominant part of the viral capsid. Originally inaccessible, the VP1u becomes exposed upon primary attachment to the globoside receptor.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.
