Simultaneous Coinfections with West Nile Virus and Usutu Virus in Culex pipiens and Aedes vexans Mosquitoes

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
The mosquito‐borne zoonotic flaviviruses West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are endemic in many European countries and emerged in Germany in recent years. Due to the increasing overlap of their distribution areas and their similar epidemiology, coinfections of WNV and USUV are possible. Indeed, coinfections in vertebrate hosts as a rare event

Chimeric Flaviviral RNA−siRNA Molecules Resist Degradation by The Exoribonuclease Xrn1 and Trigger Gene Silencing in Mammalian Cells

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 22, Issue 21, Page 3099-3106, November 3, 2021., 2021
Chimeric molecules comprising an Xrn1‐resistant RNA motif (xrRNA) and a small interfering RNA (siRNA) duplex were engineered. The molecules self‐assemble in vitro, resist degradation by the conserved eukaryotic 5’ to 3’ exoribonuclease Xrn1, and trigger gene silencing in mammalian cells.

Dengue subgenomic flaviviral RNA disrupts immunity in mosquito salivary glands to increase virus transmission. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2017
Globally re-emerging dengue viruses are transmitted from human-to-human by Aedes mosquitoes. While viral determinants of human pathogenicity have been defined, there is a lack of knowledge of how dengue viruses influence mosquito transmission ...

Role of non-coding RNAs in Dengue virus-host interaction

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Scholar, 2021
Dengue is potentially a life-threatening arthropod-borne viral infection for which there are no known therapeutic agents till date. Early stage diagnosis of dengue infection is still lacking.

Zika virus noncoding sfRNAs sequester multiple host-derived RNA-binding proteins and modulate mRNA decay and splicing during infection [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2019
Insect-borne flaviviruses produce a 300-500-base long noncoding RNA, termed subgenomic flavivirus RNA (sfRNA), by stalling the cellular 5'-3'-exoribonuclease 1 (XRN1) via structures located in their 3' UTRs. In this study, we demonstrate that sfRNA production by Zika virus represses XRN1 analogous to what we have previously shown for other flaviviruses.

Characterization of dengue virus 3'UTR RNA binding proteins in mosquitoes reveals that AeStaufen reduces subgenomic flaviviral RNA in saliva.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2022
Dengue viruses (DENV) are expanding global pathogens that are transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes, mostly Aedes aegypti. As RNA viruses, DENV rely on RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) to complete their life cycle.

Small noncoding RNA modulates japanese encephalitis virus replication and translation in trans

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2011
Background Sequence and structural elements in the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) are known to regulate translation and replication.

Zika virus noncoding RNA suppresses apoptosis and is required for virus transmission by mosquitoes

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
The function on subgenomic flaviviral RNA (sfRNA) in the mosquito vector is not well understood. Here, Slonchak et al. show that sfRNA affects virus-induced apoptosis and dissemination of ZIKV in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, suggesting a role of sfRNA in ...

TRIM25 and its emerging RNA‐binding roles in antiviral defense

open access: yesWIREs RNA, Volume 11, Issue 4, July/August 2020., 2020
E3 ubiquitin ligase TRIM25 is newly identified RNA‐binding protein which is emerging as a key factor in the innate immune response to RNA viruses. Abstract The innate immune system is the body's first line of defense against viruses, with pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) recognizing molecules unique to viruses and triggering the expression of ...
