Existence and stability of nontopological strings

Physical Review D, 1988
The existence of a class of nontopological ``string'' soliton solutions is demonstrated. The string consists of a long, thin region of false vacuum supported against collapse by the pressure of massless particles trapped in its interior. It is shown that the string configuration is stable against decay into free particles.

Gravitational stability of local strings

Physical Review Letters, 1987
The full coupled gravity-string field equations are considered and they are used to show that a general local string will have an asymptotically conical structure. For the case of the Abelian Higgs model with U(1) gauge invariance, the gravitational field of a simple local string to first order in Geta/sup 2/ is exhibited.

Moduli Stabilization and String Geometry

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008
I describe recent progress in using conformal field theory techniques to describe the stabilization of moduli fields arising in compactifications of type IIB string theory to four dimensions.

Dilaton stabilization in string cosmology. I

Astrophysics, 2000
A mechanism for stabilization of the dilaton field within the framework of low-energy string gravitation with loop corrections to the dilaton coupling function was proposed in the first part of this paper. The mechanism is based on the assumption that loop corrections generate a singular dilaton kinetic function for a certain value of the dilaton field.

String stability of interconnected systems

IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 1996
For interconnected systems of the type \[ \dot x_i= f(x_i, x_{i- 1},\dots, x_{i- r+ 1}),\tag{1} \] \(i\in \mathbb{N}\), \(x_i\equiv 0 \forall i\leq i_0\) with some fixed \(i_0\), where \(x_i\in \mathbb{R}^n\), \(f: (\mathbb{R}^n)^r\to \mathbb{R}^n\), \(f(0, \dots, 0)= 0\), the authors introduce the notion of string stability.

Existence and stability of semilocal strings

Physical Review Letters, 1992
Summary: It has recently been shown that a certain model field theory (which gives the abelian Higgs model a global SU(2) symmetry by duplicating the scalar sector) possesses static finite-energy vortex solutions despite having a simply connected vacuum manifold.

Existence and stability of nontopological fermion strings

Physical Review D, 1990
We demonstrate the existence of a class of nontopological fermion string solutions. The fermion configurations exist because of a nontrivial coupling between the fermions and a real scalar field, and their long, thin regions of false vacuum are supported against collapse by the pressure of massless particles trapped in the interior, rather than by the ...
