Toxic Plants and Their Impact on Livestock Health and Economic Losses: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesJournal of Toxicology, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
Plants are important components in sustaining the life of humans and animals, balancing ecosystems, providing animal feed and edible food for human consumption, and serving as sources of traditional and modern medicine. However, plants can be harmful to both animals and humans when ingested, leading to poisoning regardless of the quantity consumed ...

Synthesis of (-)-swainsonine and (-)-8-epi-swainsonine from (S)- and (R)-glutamic acid derivatives.

open access: yesChemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 1990
(-)-Swainsonine (1) and (-)-8-epi-swainsonine were synthesized from (S)- and (R)-glutamic acid derivatives. (2R, 3S, 4R)-3, 4-Dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethylpyrolidine derivatives (9a and 9b) were prepared by cis-dihydroxylation of α, β-unsaturated compounds 6, 10 and 15 with OsO4 as the key reaction.

Swainsonine reduces 5-fluorouracil tolerance in the multistage resistance of colorectal cancer cell lines

open access: yesMolecular Cancer, 2007
Background Drug resistance is a major problem in cancer chemotherapy. Acquisition of chemo-resistance not only reduces the effectiveness of drugs, but also promotes side effects and markedly reduces the patient's quality of life.

Multicellular Human Gastric Cancer Spheroids Mimic the Glycosylation Phenotype of Gastric Carcinomas

open access: yesMolecules, 2018
Cellular glycosylation plays a pivotal role in several molecular mechanisms controlling cell–cell recognition, communication, and adhesion. Thus, aberrant glycosylation has a major impact on the acquisition of malignant features in the tumor progression ...

The combined use of stereoelectronic control and ring closing metathesis for the synthesis of (-)-8-epi-swainsonine

open access: yes, 2007
A novel and efficient synthesis of (-)-8-epi-swainsonine 2 is reported. Stereocontrolled diol formation from the bicyclic alkene 3 followed by a stereoselective vinylation of the aldehyde and ring closing metathesis gave the indolizidine ring system ...

Spontaneous poisoning by Sida carpinifolia (Malvaceae) in horses

open access: yesPesquisa Veterinária Brasileira
: Sida carpinifolia poisoning causes a chronic neurodegenerative disorder associated with lysosomal storage by indolizidine alkaloids (swainsonine). The epidemiological, clinical, pathological and lectin histochemistry findings of an outbreak of natural ...

Asymmetric synthesis of anti-1,2-amino alcohols via the Borono-Mannich reaction: a formal synthesis of (-)-swainsonine

open access: yes, 2006
Chiral α-hydroxy-aldehydes generated in situ by the ADH reaction of vinyl sulfones undergo a borono-Mannich reaction with β-styrenyl boronic acid and primary amines to give anti-1,2-amino alcohols in high enantiomeric purities (ee 83-95%).

Swainsonine Induces Liver Inflammation in Mice via Disturbance of Gut Microbiota and Bile Acid Metabolism

open access: yes, 2023
Swainsonine induced liver inflammation in livestock; however, the underlying mechanisms, especially the role of bile acids (BAs), in the pathogenesis remained elusive. Here, our results showed that swainsonine induced hepatic inflammation via changing BA
