Axolemmal repair requires proteins that mediate synaptic vesicle fusion

Journal of Neurobiology, 2000
A damaged cell membrane is repaired by a seal that restricts entry or exit of molecules and ions to that of the level passing through an undamaged membrane. Seal formation requires elevation of intracellular Ca(2+) and, very likely, protein-mediated fusion of membranes. Ca(2+) also regulates the interaction between synaptotagmin (Syt) and syntaxin (Syx)

Coupling calcium to SNARE–mediated synaptic vesicle fusion

Nature Neuroscience, 1999
Calcium triggers vesicle fusion, but the molecular mechanism is largely unknown. Now Ilardi and colleagues identify Snapin, a protein that may provide the missing link.

Synaptic Vesicle Fusion Followed by Clathrin-Mediated Endocytosis

Science's STKE, 2003
The animation shows calcium-stimulated exocytosis of synaptic vesicles followed by clathrin-mediated vesicle recycling. Many of the molecular components that are involved in synaptic vesicle priming, docking, fusion, and endocytosis are shown. Although the process in the animation describes synaptic vesicle cycling, similar cellular processes occur for

Observing isolated synaptic vesicle association and fusion ex vivo

Nature Protocols
Here, we present a protocol for isolating functionally intact glutamatergic synaptic vesicles from whole-mouse brain tissue and using them in a single-vesicle assay to examine their association and fusion with plasma membrane mimic vesicles. This is a Protocol Extension, building on our previous protocol, which used a purely synthetic system comprised ...

Roles of SNARE Proteins in Synaptic Vesicle Fusion

2008
Neurotransmitters are stored in small membrane-bound vesicles at synapses. Neurotransmitter release is initiated by depolarization of the neuron, which in turn activates voltage-gated calcium channels. Calcium influx then triggers the fusion of the synaptic vesicles with the plasma membrane.
