How to diagnose and treat patients with inflammatory bowel disease [PDF]

open access: yesArhiv za farmaciju, 2017
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are idiopathic, chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases. IBD pathogenesis is related to altered immune response and its complex interaction with gut microbiota, genetic and environmental factors.

Inequities in inflammatory bowel disease care: a Tasmanian case study with proposed solutions

open access: yesInternal Medicine Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract There is well‐recognised inequity of care for people treated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) between metropolitan and regional areas. We aim to describe these barriers to care using Tasmania as a case example and to suggest solutions for addressing these barriers that can be used in Tasmania and beyond.

Direct evidence of singlet molecular oxygen [O2 (1Δg)] production from UVA excited 6‐thioguanine

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
6‐Thioguanine (6‐TGua) is incorporated into DNA as a purine analogue, inhibiting cell replication. Patients treated with 6‐TGua are more prone to developing skin cancer due to the photoexcitation of 6‐TGua by UVA radiation (as illustrated in the Jablonski diagram). Upon exposure to UVA, the excited 6‐TGua generates 1O2.

Model‐Based Strategy for 6‐Mercaptopurine Treatment in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Maintenance Phase: Prediction of 6‐TGN and 6‐MMP Concentrations to Optimize Treatment

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, Volume 73, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric cancer. The pro‐drug 6‐mercaptopurine (6‐MP), essential during maintenance, is converted into active 6‐thioguanine (6‐TGN) and toxic 6‐methylmercaptopurine (6‐MMP) metabolites, resulting in marked variability in efficacy and toxicity.

Thiopurine 6TG treatment increases tumor immunogenicity and response to immune checkpoint blockade

open access: yesOncoImmunology, 2023
Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are highly effective in reinvigorating T cells to attack cancer. Nevertheless, a large subset of patients fails to benefit from ICI, partly due to lack of the cancer neoepitopes necessary to trigger an immune response ...

Personalization of thiopurine therapy: Current recommendations and future perspectives

open access: yesActa Pharmaceutica
Despite great therapeutic advances in the field of biologics, small synthetic molecules such as thiopurines, including azathioprine, mercaptopurine, and thioguanine, remain an important therapeutic pillar in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease ...
