NMDA receptor mediated tonic excitatory currents are elicited by EAAT inhibition on human neocortical pyramidal neurons [PDF]
Frontiers in Synaptic NeuroscienceIntroductionAmbient glutamate is capable of regulating neural excitability and contributes to several brain pathologies. It is well established by experiments on rodent tissue that extrasynaptic glutamate –mainly regulated by astrocytic glutamate uptake-

Molecular Brain, 2021 Light is a powerful external cue modulating the biological rhythm of internal clock neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). GABA signaling in SCN is critically involved in this process. Both phasic and tonic modes of GABA signaling exist in SCN. Of

Vesicular Release of GABA by Mammalian Horizontal Cells Mediates Inhibitory Output to Photoreceptors
Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2020 Feedback inhibition by horizontal cells regulates rod and cone photoreceptor calcium channels that control their release of the neurotransmitter glutamate.

Astrocytic GABA Accumulation in Experimental Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Frontiers in Neurology, 2020 An imbalance of excitation and inhibition has been associated with the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Loss of GABAergic interneurons and/or synaptic inhibition has been shown in various epilepsy models and in human epilepsy.

MUSCARINIC LONG-TERM ENHANCEMENT OF TONIC AND PHASIC GABAA INHIBITION IN RAT CA1 PYRAMIDAL NEURONS
Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2016 Acetylcholine (ACh) regulates network operation in the hippocampus by controlling excitation and inhibition in rat CA1 pyramidal neurons (PCs), the latter through gamma-aminobutyric acid type-A receptors (GABAARs).

Single Ethanol Withdrawal Regulates Extrasynaptic δ-GABAA Receptors Via PKCδ Activation
Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2018 Alcohol (ethanol, EtOH) is one of the most widely abused drugs with profound effects on brain function and behavior. GABAA receptors (GABAARs) are one of the major targets for EtOH in the brain.

Insulin reduces neuronal excitability by turning on GABA(A) channels that generate tonic current. [PDF]
PLoS ONE, 2011 Insulin signaling to the brain is important not only for metabolic homeostasis but also for higher brain functions such as cognition. GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) decreases neuronal excitability by activating GABA(A) channels that generate phasic and tonic
