Exploring the Fate of Nitrogen Heterocycles in Complex Prebiotic Mixtures [PDF]
A long standing question in the field of prebiotic chemistry is the origin of the genetic macromolecules DNA and RNA. DNA and RNA have very complex structures with repeating subunits of nucleotides, which are composed of nucleobases (nitrogen ...

Noncanonical Nucleotides in the Genome Around the Maternal‐Zygotic Transition
In this paper, Kazzazi et al. provide a comprehensive review of the dynamics of nonconventional nucleotides in the genome during early developmental stages, hypothesizing a potential role for these nucleotides in the activation of the zygotic genome. ABSTRACT From the very moment of fertilization and throughout development, the cells of animal embryos ...

The relationship between gene traits and transcription in soil microbial communities varies by environmental stimulus [PDF]
Codon and nucleotide frequencies are known to relate to the rate of gene transcription, yet how these traits shape transcriptional profiles of soil microbial communities remains unclear.

Opposite effects of uracil and adenine nucleotides on the survival of murine cardiomyocytes [PDF]
AbstractWe previously showed that the human heart expresses all known P2X and P2Y receptors activated by extra‐cellular adenine or uracil nucleotides. Despite evidence that, both in humans and rodents, plasma levels of ATP and UTP markedly increase during myocardial infarction, the differential effects mediated by the various adenine‐ and uracil ...

Identification of Natural and Artificial Modifications in DNA at the Nanometer Level
Short single‐ and double‐stranded DNA sequences with natural and artificial markers are examined at ambient conditions using TERS to identify and localize the labelled nucleobases. The differences between single‐ and double‐stranded DNA should provide clear experimental evidence of the extreme surface sensitivity of TERS.

Rex1p Deficiency Leads to Accumulation of Precursor Initiator tRNA\u3csup\u3eMet\u3c/sup\u3e and Polyadenylation of Substrate RNAs in \u3cem\u3eSaccharomyces cerevisiae\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]
A synthetic genetic array was used to identify lethal and slow-growth phenotypes produced when a mutation in TRM6, which encodes a tRNA modification enzyme subunit, was combined with the deletion of any non-essential gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The Nuclease Activity of the Yeast Dna2 Protein, Which Is Related to the RecB-like Nucleases, Is Essential in Vivo [PDF]
Saccharomyces cerevisiae Dna2 protein is required for DNA replication and repair and is associated with multiple biochemical activities: DNA-dependent ATPase, DNA helicase, and DNA nuclease.

Raman spectroscopy successfully identified antibiotic‐resistant Gram‐negative strains. Resistant strains of four bacterial species were discriminated from sensitive ones with 99.1% accuracy using PLS regression. The method allows for rapid, label‐free detection of antibiotic resistance.

The Mechanism of Dna Repair by Uracil-Dna Glycosylase: Studies Using Nucleotide Analogues [PDF]
2',4'-Dideoxy-4'-methyleneuridine incorporated into oligodeoxynucleotides forms regular B-DNA duplexes as shown by Tm and CD measurements. Such oligomers are not cleaved by the DNA repair enzyme, UDG, which cleaves the glycosylic bond in dU but not in dT nor in dC nucleosides in single stranded and double stranded DNA. Differential binding of oligomers

RNA degradomics revealed dsProsβ1‐derived siRNA‐mediated mRNA cleavage events, mainly at uracil‐guanine and adenine‐adenine pairs. Proteasome inhibition via dsProsβ1 increased mitochondrial and cytoskeletal proteins while reducing translation‐related and mRNA‐binding proteins.
