Antiproliferative effect of urolithin A, the ellagic acid-derived colonic metabolite, on hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2.2.15 cells by targeting Lin28a/let-7a axis

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2018
An abnormality in the Lin28/let-7a axis is relevant to the progression of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which could be a novel therapeutic target for this malignant tumor.

Muscadine or amla extracts standardized to ellagic acid content ameliorate glucolipotoxicity associated β-cell dysfunction via inhibition of IL-1β and improved insulin secretion

open access: yesFood Production, Processing and Nutrition, 2020
Glucolipotocixity induces IL-1 β secretion which impairs pancreatic β-cell insulin secretion. Ellagic acid and urolithin A have strong anti-inflammatory effect on cells. Muscadine and amla are very good sources of ellagic acid. The present study examined

Diverse Phytochemicals and Bioactivities in the Ancient Fruit and Modern Functional Food Pomegranate (Punica granatum)

open access: yesMolecules, 2017
Having served as a symbolic fruit since ancient times, pomegranate (Punica granatum) has also gained considerable recognition as a functional food in the modern era. A large body of literature has linked pomegranate polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins

Isolation and characterization of a novel human intestinal Enterococcus faecium FUA027 capable of producing urolithin A from ellagic acid

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2022
Urolithin A (UA) has received considerable research attention because of its health benefits. However, only a few strains have been reported to produce UA from ellagic acid (EA), and the molecular mechanisms underlying the gut microbiota-mediated ...

Identification of Novel Urolithin Metabolites in Human Feces and Urine after the Intake of a Pomegranate Extract

open access: yes, 2019
Urolithins are bioactive gut microbiota metabolites of ellagic acid. Here, we have identified four unknown urolithins in human feces after the intake of a pomegranate extract. The new metabolites occurred only in 19% of the subjects.

The presence and induction of regioselective dehydroxylases dictate urolithin metabolism by Enterocloster species

open access: yesnpj Biofilms and Microbiomes
Urolithins are a class of bioactive metabolites derived from the metabolism of dietary ellagitannins by the human gut microbiota. In the gut, urolithins are dehydroxylated regioselectively based on microbiota composition and activity.
