Regulation of a system with variable structure

1981 20th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes, 1981
The linearized process dynamics of the boiler in a solar-powered central receiver change abruptly when clouds pass over the heliostats which direct the sun's rays toward it. The steam temperature regulator used to control exit steam conditions must control a system with variable structure and discontinuous state trajectories.

On a Class of Variable-Structure Systems

1974
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the optimal control of a class of discrete, time-invariant, variable-structure systems. Both deterministic and stochastic problems are considered for unbounded control and the cost functional quadratic in state. Solutions are obtained in closed-form.

Variable Structure Control of Systems with Sandwiched Backlash

Proceedings of the 2005 IEEE International Symposium on, Mediterrean Conference on Control and Automation Intelligent Control, 2005., 2005
This paper proposes a novel approach for the stabilization problem of a sandwich nonlinear system with a backlash nonlinearity between two dynamic blocks. To this purpose a robust sliding mode controller has been designed ensuring the convergence of the system trajectories in a neighborhood of the origin of arbitrary width (independently of the ...

Variable structure control of a magnetic levitation system

Proceedings of the 2001 American Control Conference. (Cat. No.01CH37148), 2001
Presents a variable structure control (VSC) design procedure for robust stabilization and disturbance rejection of a magnetic levitation system. The procedure is based on a method called the reaching law method complemented by a sliding mode equivalence technique.

Slow periodic motions in variable structure systems

International Journal of Systems Science, 2001
Singularly perturbed relay control systems (SPRCS) which have stable periodic motion in reduced systems are studied. The slow motions integral manifold of such systems consists of parts which correspond to different values of control and the solutions of SPRCS contain the jumps from one part of the slow manifold to the other.

Sensitivity of automatic control systems with variable structure

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1964
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the sensitivity of automatic control systems with variable structure. It describes the task of synthesizing control systems for linear plants with variable parameters satisfying specified performance criteria. As one of the indices of dynamic properties of the system, the settling time is considered.

On the uncertain variable structure systems with bounded controllers

Journal of the Franklin Institute, 2003
Under suitable assumptions, the problem of estimating the asymptotic stability region (ASR) of uncertain variable structure systems with bounded controllers is studied. It is proved that there exists a sliding surface parameter matrix iff some linear matrix inequalities (LMI) hold true.

State estimation of a class of stochastic variable structure systems

Proceedings of the 41st IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2002., 2003
In many engineering applications the process to be controlled or to be filtered can be modeled as a variable structure system, i.e. a system whose dynamics switches within a finite set of behaviors. Different approaches to the filtering problem can be followed, according to the nature of the switching process.

DECENTRALIZED VARIABLE STRUCTURE CONTROL OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1994
Abstract The paper considers the problem of stabilizing large scale dynamic systems (LSS) via decentralized controllers based on Variable Structure Systems (VSS) and using the principle of dominant subsystems. The principle and applications for LSS are described and simulation test results on a two- machines power system with nonlinear model are ...

Decentralized variable structure control of complex systems

International Journal of Systems Science, 1998
This paper considers the problem of stabilizing large scale dynamic systems (LSS) via decentralized controllers based on Variable Structure Systems (VSS), using the principle of dominant subsystems. The principle and applications for LSS are described and simulation results on a two-machine power system with a linear and nonlinear model are presented.
