Variable-structure coherent systems

International Journal of General Systems, 2005
The notion of coherent systems plays an essential role in conventional reliability theory. A system is said to be coherent if all of its components are relevant and the system reliability is improved as the component reliabilities are improved. However, in many complex systems or networks, not all the components are unconditionally relevant.

Variable structure modelling of dynamic industry systems

Journal of the Operational Research Society, 2000
Summary: This paper argues for and develops a variable structure modelling methodology, that is one which treats individual players in an industry as agents and provides the means for agent entry and exit as well as evolution of their behaviour. The resulting simulation framework extends traditional industry dynamics approaches and object oriented ...

VARIABLE STRUCTURE CONTROLLERS IN MOTION CONTROL SYSTEMS

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1992
Abstract The VSS approach to motion control system design is presented in this paper. The selection of the sliding mode manifolds, the synthesis of the control inputs and the sliding mode manifolds estimation are discussed. The switching pattern, for switching converter operation is determined from the sliding mode existence conditions.

On the synthesis of variable structure observers for LPV systems

2017 IEEE 56th Annual Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), 2017
In this paper, an analysis and synthesis framework for a class of robust variable structure observers for linear parameter varying (LPV) systems is proposed. Instead of satisfying passivity-like conditions, the variable structure observer is created by ensuring a small gain condition is satisfied, formulated via loop transformations. The transformation

Scaling Of Structural And Functional Variables In The Respiratory System

Annual Review of Physiology, 1987
Dependencies in the Respiratory System In his companion review C. R. Taylor (38) concludes that the capacity for oxidative metabolism in the mitochondria sets the limit for energy supply to muscles. Consequently, to supply O2 to the mitochondria at the rate required by oxidative phosphorylation is a critical process that involves the entire respiratory

Adaptive variable structure control of nonlinear systems

1999 European Control Conference (ECC), 1999
Variable Structure Control(VSC) with sliding mode is a special type of control technique that is capable of making a control system very robust with respect to system parameter variations and external disturbances. The chattering of the VSC signal can be reduced by several methods.

Variable Structure Control of Sampled-Data Systems

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1997
Abstract For a continuous-time systenl, a sliding sector is designed as a subspace of system state space, where some norm of the system state decreases. The continuoustime VSS control law is designed to Inove the system state from the outside to the inside of the PR-sliding sector while the norn1 keeps decreasing. In the paper.

Hyperstability in variable structure systems

1980 19th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes, 1980
Reaching and existence conditions for variable structure systems are considered using hyperstability theory. A new sufficient condition for linear, time invariant systems is derived, and an example is given to illustrate how the condition is more relaxed than the sufficient condition presently used for such systems.

Variability of sif and cod of stochastic structural systems

Computers & Structures, 1992
Stochastic structural systems having a stochastic distribution of material properties and stochastic external loadings in space are analysed when a crack of deterministic size is present. The energy release rate is derived using the method of virtual crack extension.

Fuzzy smoothing algorithms for variable structure systems

IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, 1994
A variable structure system (VSS) is a control system implementing different control laws in different regions of the state space divided by a set of boundary manifolds. The control input switches from one control law to another when the state crosses the boundary manifolds.
