VDAC1: A Key Player in the Mitochondrial Landscape of Neurodegeneration

open access: yesBiomolecules
Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel 1 (VDAC1) is a mitochondrial outer membrane protein that plays a crucial role in regulating cellular energy metabolism and apoptosis by mediating the exchange of ions and metabolites between mitochondria and the cytosol ...

Investigating VDAC1 Orientation In Vivo [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2010
VDAC is an important and abundant ion channel in mitochondrial outer membranes but its structure remained unclear until recent structures of human VDAC1 revealed a 19 stranded β-barrel. Nevertheless there are still unresolved questions concerning the orientation of VDAC in the membrane and its fine structure.

VDAC1 Is a Transplasma Membrane NADH-Ferricyanide Reductase [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2004
Porin isoform 1 or VDAC (voltage-dependent anion-selective channel) 1 is the predominant protein in the outer mitochondrial membrane. We demonstrated previously that a plasma membrane NADH-ferricyanide reductase activity becomes up-regulated upon mitochondrial perturbation, and therefore suggested that it functions as a cellular redox sensor.

Inhibition of VDAC1 Rescues Aβ1-42-Induced Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Ferroptosis via Activation of AMPK and Wnt/β-Catenin Pathways

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2023
Beta-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and ferroptosis in neurons. Voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) is a major protein in the mitochondrial outer membrane. It has been

Inactivation of the TIM complex components leads to a decrease in the level of DNA import into Arabidopsis mitochondria

open access: yesВавиловский журнал генетики и селекции, 2023
The phenomenon of DNA import into mitochondria has been shown for all major groups of eukaryotes. In plants and animals, DNA import seems to occur in different ways. It has been known that nucleic acids enter plant organelles through alternative channels,

VDAC1-interacting anion transport inhibitors inhibit VDAC1 oligomerization and apoptosis

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Cell Research, 2016
Mitochondria-mediated apoptosis involves pro-apoptotic protein release from the mitochondria to the cytosol, triggering apoptosis. However, the mechanisms by which apoptotic initiators cross the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) remain unclear. The voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1), an OMM protein, is central to mitochondria-mediated apoptosis.

PGC1α and VDAC1 expression in endometrial cancer

open access: yesMolecular and Clinical Oncology, 2020
Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the ten most common gynecological cancers. As in most cancers, EC tumour progression involves alterations in cellular metabolism and can be associated with, for instance, altered levels of glycolytic enzymes. Mitochondrial functions and proteins are known to serve key roles in tumour metabolism and progression.

Probing the orientation of yeast VDAC1 in vivo [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 2009
Voltage dependent anion channel (VDAC) is a vital ion channel in mitochondrial outer membranes and its structure was recently shown to be a 19 stranded β‐barrel. However the orientation of VDAC in the membrane remains unclear. We probe here the topology and membrane orientation of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in vivo.

News about VDAC1 in Hypoxia [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2016
The voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) is the main interface between the cytosol and mitochondria of cells. It plays a crucial role in both mitochondrial metabolism and cell death. The main basic function of this channel is to mediate and gate the flux of small ions, metabolites, and adenosine triphosphate.
