Properties of distinct ventral tegmental area synapses activated via pedunculopontine or ventral tegmental area stimulationin vitro [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 2009
Anatomical studies indicate that synaptic inputs from many cortical and subcortical structures converge on neurons of the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Althoughin vitroelectrophysiological studies have examined synaptic inputs to dopamine (DA) and non‐DA neurons in the VTA, they have largely relied upon local electrical stimulation to activate these ...

Opioid Modulation of Ventral Pallidal Afferents to Ventral Tegmental Area Neurons [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Neuroscience, 2013
Activation of mu opioid receptors within the ventral tegmental area (VTA) can produce reward through the inhibition of GABAergic inputs. GABAergic neurons in the ventral pallidum (VP) provide a major input to VTA neurons. To determine the specific VTA neuronal targets of VP afferents and their sensitivity to mu opioid receptor agonists, we virally ...

Prompting social investigation

open access: yeseLife
A social memory pathway connecting the ventral hippocampus, the lateral septum and the ventral tegmental area helps to regulate how mice react to unknown individuals.

Afferent connections of the valvula cerebelli in two teleosts, the common goldfish and the green sunfish [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
The afferent connections of the valvula cerebelli were examined in one cypriniform teleost (Carassius auratus) and one perciform teleost (Lepomis cyanellus) with the use of horseradish peroxidase as a retrograde tracer.

The Effect of L-arginine in the Ventral Tegmenta Area on the Improving Effect of Nicotine on Memory

open access: yesMajallah-i Dānishgāh-i ̒Ulūm-i Pizishkī-i Qum, 2012
Background and Objectives: Nitric oxide synthesis has been detected in ventral tegmental area, which is a key brain region that seems to mediate behavioral effect of morphine and nicotine.

Midbrain glutamatergic circuit mechanism of resilience to socially transferred allodynia in male mice

open access: yesNature Communications
The potential brain mechanism underlying resilience to socially transferred allodynia remains unknown. Here, we utilize a well-established socially transferred allodynia paradigm to segregate male mice into pain-susceptible and pain-resilient subgroups ...

Ventral tegmental area GABA neurons mediate stress-induced blunted reward-seeking in mice

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Acute stress transiently disrupts reward-seeking behaviour and repeated stress exposure produces lasting anhedonia-like behaviour in rodents. Here, the authors show that stress triggers GABAergic activity in the ventral tegmental area which blunts reward-

Nigra‐Subthalamic Dopaminergic Circuitry Modulates and Represents Distinct Pain Modality in Physiological and Pain States in Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Nigral dopaminergic (DA) neurons modulate and represent pain with a preference to a particular modality (mechanical) and laterality (contralateral), which are controlled by nigral GABAergic neurons. The pain modulation is mimicked by the nigro‐subthalamic projection and its downstream neurons, involving D2‐like receptors.

Ventral tegmental area astrocytes orchestrate avoidance and approach behavior

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Astrocytes can dynamically control glutamate availability at specific active synapses through the glutamate transporter, GLT-1. Here, the authors show that astrocytes in the VTA selectively facilitate excitation of VTA GABAergic neurons to inhibit ...

Neural correlates of emotion processing comparing antidepressants and exogenous oxytocin in postpartum depressed women: An exploratory study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Despite common use of antidepressants to treat postpartum depression, little is known about the impact of antidepressant use on postpartum brain activity.
