Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels in Neurological Disorders
CNS & Neurological Disorders - Drug Targets, 2008Voltage-gated sodium channels play an essential biophysical role in many excitable cells such as neurons. They transmit electrical signals through action potential (AP) generation and propagation in the peripheral (PNS) and central nervous systems (CNS). Each sodium channel is formed by one alpha-subunit and one or more beta-subunits.

Voltage-gated sodium channels as therapeutic targets
Drug Discovery Today, 2000Voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) play a central role in the generation and propagation of action potentials in neurons and other cells. VGSC modulators have their origins in empirical pharmacology and are being used as local anaesthetics, antiarrhythmics, analgesics and antiepileptics, and for other disorders.

Conotoxin modulation of voltage-gated sodium channels
The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2008The rising phase of the action potential in excitable cells is mediated by voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs), of which there are nine mammalian subtypes with distinct tissue distribution and biophysical properties. The involvement of certain VGSC subtypes in disease states such as pain and epilepsy highlights the need for agents that modulate VGSCs

Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Blockers as Immunomodulators
Recent Patents on CNS Drug Discovery, 2006Several Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels (VGSC) are widely expressed on lymphocytes and macrophages but their role in immune function is still debated. Nevertheless, Na(+) influx through VGSC is required for lymphocytes activation and proliferation, since these responses are blocked by Na(+)-free medium or by VGSC blockers.

Voltage‐gated sodium channels and pain pathways
Journal of Neurobiology, 2004AbstractAcute, inflammatory, and neuropathic pain can all be attenuated or abolished by local treatment with sodium channel blockers such as lidocaine. The peripheral input that drives pain perception thus depends on the presence of functional voltage‐gated sodium channels.

Risperidone inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels
European Journal of Pharmacology, 2014In contrast to several other antipsychotic drugs, the effects of the atypical antipsychotic risperidone on voltage-gated sodium channels have not been characterized yet, despite its wide clinical use. Here we performed whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings to analyze the effects of risperidone on voltage-dependent sodium currents of N1E-115 mouse ...

Diversity of Mammalian Voltage‐Gated Sodium Channels
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1999ABSTRACT: A variety of different isoforms of mammalian voltage‐gated sodium channels have been identified. These channels can be classified into three different types. Eight type 1 isoforms have been identified in the CNS, PNS, skeletal muscle, and heart.

Toxins That Affect Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels
2017Voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) are critical in generation and conduction of electrical signals in multiple excitable tissues. Natural toxins, produced by animal, plant, and microorganisms, target VGSCs through diverse strategies developed over millions of years of evolutions.
