Inhibitory Effects of Edaravone, a Free Radical Scavenger, on Cytokine-induced Hyperpermeability of Human Pulmonary Microvascular Endothelial Cells:A Comparison with Dexamethasone and Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitor [PDF]
Lung hyperpermeability affects the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but therapeutic strategies for the control of microvascular permeability have not been established.

En face optical coherence tomography of foveal microstructure in full-thickness macular hole: a model to study perifoveal müller cells. [PDF]
PURPOSE: To characterize perifoveal intraretinal cavities observed around full-thickness macular holes (MH) using en face optical coherence tomography and to establish correlations with histology of human and primate maculae.

Neuronal connexin36 association with zonula occludens‐1 protein (ZO‐1) in mouse brain and interaction with the first PDZ domain of ZO‐1 [PDF]
AbstractAmong the 20 members in the connexin family of gap junction proteins, only connexin36 (Cx36) is firmly established to be expressed in neurons and to form electrical synapses at widely distributed interneuronal gap junctions in mammalian brain.

Longitudinal Changes to Tight Junction Expression and Endothelial Cell Integrity in a Mouse Model of Sterile Corneal Inflammation [PDF]
PURPOSE: We previously reported that applying toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands to an injured cornea induces corneal edema at 24 hours, which subsides by 1 week.

Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli , Shigella flexneri , and Listeria monocytogenes Recruit a Junctional Protein, Zonula Occludens-1, to Actin Tails and Pedestals [PDF]
ABSTRACT Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli , Shigella flexneri , and Listeria monocytogenes induce localized actin polymerization at the cytoplasmic face of the plasma membrane or within the host cytoplasm, creating unique actin-rich structures termed ...

Modeling the blood–brain tumor barrier is challenging due to complex interactions between brain microvasculature and glioma cells. We present two‐photon polymerized 3D micro‐porous capillary‐like structures that support endothelial alignment, cytoskeletal organization, and pericyte‐endothelial‐glioma tri‐cultures.

HIV-1 transgene expression in rats causes oxidant stress and alveolar epithelial barrier dysfunction
Background HIV-infected individuals are at increased risk for acute and chronic airway disease even though there is no evidence that the virus can infect the lung epithelium.

The junction-associated protein, zonula occludens-1, localizes to the nucleus before the maturation and during the remodeling of cell-cell contacts. [PDF]
The junction-associated protein zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) is a member of a family of membrane-associated guanylate kinase homologues thought to be important in signal transduction at sites of cell-cell contact. We present evidence that under certain conditions of cell growth, ZO-1 can be detected in the nucleus.
