A Nonclassical Mechanism of β-Lactam Resistance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Its Effect on Virulence [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2022
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a group of pathogenic bacteria that are infamously resistant to β-lactam antibiotics, a property attributed to the mecA gene.

Identification of host genetic factors modulating β-lactam resistance in Escherichia coli harbouring plasmid-borne β-lactamase through transposon-sequencing [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections
Since β-lactam antibiotics are widely used, emergence of bacteria with resistance to them poses a significant threat to society. In particular, acquisition of genes encoding β-lactamase, an enzyme that degrades β-lactam antibiotics, has been a major ...

Molecular Determinants of β-Lactam Resistance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA): An Updated Review [PDF]

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2023
The development of antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus, particularly in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), has become a significant health concern worldwide.

Detection of β-lactam resistance genes in Gram-negative bacteria from positive blood cultures using a microchip-based molecular assay [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
BackgroundAccurate detection of β-lactam resistance genes in bloodstream infections is critical for guiding antimicrobial therapy. This study evaluates the Alifax Gram-negative resistance (GNR) microchip assay for detecting β-lactam resistance genes ...

Exploration of the role of the penicillin binding protein 2c (Pbp2c) in inducible β-lactam resistance in Corynebacteriaceae [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Six genes encoding putative high molecular weight penicillin-binding proteins (Pbp) are present in the genome of the β-lactam-resistant strain Corynebacterium jeikeium K411.

β-Lactam potentiators to re-sensitize resistant pathogens: Discovery, development, clinical use and the way forward

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
β-lactam antibiotics are one of the most widely used and diverse classes of antimicrobial agents for treating both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial infections.

Purine Nucleosides Interfere with c-di-AMP Levels and Act as Adjuvants To Re-Sensitize MRSA To β-Lactam Antibiotics

open access: yesmBio, 2023
The purine-derived signaling molecules c-di-AMP and (p)ppGpp control mecA/PBP2a-mediated β-lactam resistance in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) raise the possibility that purine availability can control antibiotic susceptibility ...

Detection of an IS21 insertion sequence in the mexR gene of Pseudomonas aeruginosa increasing β-lactam resistance [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2004
To understand the regulation of the MexAB OprM efflux system in a clinical strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa presenting a decreased susceptibility to ticarcillin and aztreonam, the mexR repressor gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and was shown to be disrupted by an insertion sequence of more than 2 kb, with characteristic direct and ...

Decreased membrane permeability in a polymyxin B-resistantEscherichia colimutant exhibiting multiple resistance to β-lactams as well as aminoglycosides [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1998
A laboratory mutant of Escherichia coli stably resistant to more than 36,000 U ml-1 of polymyxin B was isolated. The mutant exhibited moderate increases in minimum inhibitory concentration to fluoroquinolones and bacitracin but high levels of cross-resistance to beta-lactams and aminoglycosides.
