Experimental Evidence for a Metal‐Related Function of a Cyanobactin

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Cyanobactins such as patellamides are produced by cyanobacteria profusely and have been studied extensively, but almost exclusively for their cytotoxic properties. Discussed is unprecedented experimental evidence for a metal‐related biological function – likely CO2 transport from the ascidian to the cyanobacterial symbiont.

Genetic Analysis of Virulence and β-Lactamase Determinants Related to β-Lactamase Inhibitors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains from Nosocomial Infections

open access: yesAntibiotics
Background/Objectives: The emergence of hypervirulent Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains resistant to β-lactamase inhibitor antibiotics is a critical health problem as they impede the treatment of infections.

Deciphering the Evolution of Cephalosporin Resistance to Ceftolozane-Tazobactam in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

open access: yesmBio, 2018
Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a class C β-lactamase (e.g., PDC-3) that robustly hydrolyzes early generation cephalosporins often at the diffusion limit; therefore, bacteria possessing these β-lactamases are resistant to many β-lactam antibiotics.

Integrating One Health to Mitigate the Emergence and Spread of Antimicrobial Resistance in Livestock and Aquaculture

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating global threat driven by antimicrobial use in aquaculture and livestock. Resistant pathogens and genes can spread across humans, animals, and the environment through interconnected ecosystems. Using a One Health approach, this review emphasizes antimicrobial stewardship, regulatory strengthening, enhanced ...

A Novel β-lactam/β-lactamase Inhibitor: Ceftolozane/tazobactam

open access: yesMediterranean Journal of Infection, Microbes and Antimicrobials, 2019
Ceftolozane/tazobactam is a novel generation cephalosporin and β-lactamase inhibitor combination antibiotic. It was approved for the treatment of adults (18 years and older) with complicated intraabdominal infections used in combination with ...

Determination of MIC and Disk Diffusion Quality Control Guidelines for Meropenem–Vaborbactam, a Novel Carbapenem/Boronic Acid β-Lactamase Inhibitor Combination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Meropenem–vaborbactam is a carbapenem/cyclic boronic acid β-lactamase inhibitor combination primarily active against Gram-negative bacilli, including those harboring class A serine carbapenemases such as Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC).

Crystal Structure of DIM-1, an Acquired Subclass B1 Metallo-β-Lactamase from Pseudomonas stutzeri [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) hydrolyze almost all classes of β-lactam antibiotic, including carbapenems—currently first choice drugs for opportunistic infections by Gram-negative bacterial pathogens.

Population pharmacokinetic modelling of amoxicillin in human breast milk—A contribution from the ConcePTION project

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Aims Amoxicillin, a widely used β‐lactam antibiotic, requires improved pharmacokinetic characterization during breastfeeding. This study used a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) approach to model amoxicillin concentrations in breast milk, identify variability sources and estimate infant exposure, applying worst‐case scenarios.

Insight into the effect of inhibitor resistant S130G mutant on physico-chemical properties of SHV type beta-lactamase: a molecular dynamics study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Bacterial resistance is a serious threat to human health. The production of β-lactamase, which inactivates β-lactams is most common cause of resistance to the β-lactam antibiotics.
