Enhancement effects of antimicrobial activities of β-lactam antibiotics by combination with persimmon tannin against β-lactamase-producing Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background β-lactamase-producing Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important bacterial pathogens. Combinations of β-lactam antibiotics with β-lactamase inhibitors such as sulbactam and tazobactam are useful therapeutic methods for combating ...

Polypyridine ligands as potential metallo-β-lactamase inhibitors

open access: yes, 2021
Bacteria have developed multiple resistance mechanisms against the most used antibiotics. In particular, zinc-dependent metallo-β-lactamase producing bacteria are a growing threat, and therapeutic options are limited ...

Detecting Antibiotic Resistance in Strains of Selected Gram‐Negative Bacterial Species Using Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectroscopy successfully identified antibiotic‐resistant Gram‐negative strains. Resistant strains of four bacterial species were discriminated from sensitive ones with 99.1% accuracy using PLS regression. The method allows for rapid, label‐free detection of antibiotic resistance.

Responsive nitric oxide‐releasing antibacterial materials for biofilm‐associated infections: Mechanisms, design strategies, and applications

open access: yesResponsive Materials, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the recent progress in responsive NO‐releasing materials and their applications in biofilm‐associated infectious diseases. The design principles and response mechanisms are given to provide inspiration toward the future development of multi‐responsive NO‐releasing materials.

β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations: an update

open access: yes, 2018
Antibiotic resistance caused by β-lactamase production continues to present a growing challenge to the efficacy of β-lactams and their role as the most important class of clinically used antibiotics.

Aztreonam Combinations with Avibactam, Relebactam, and Vaborbactam as Treatment for New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacterales Infections—In Vitro Susceptibility Testing

open access: yesPharmaceuticals
Antimicrobial resistance is a major global health issue. Metallo-β-lactamases (MBL), in particular, are problematic because they can inactivate all classes of β-lactams except aztreonam.

Reusing health records from farm animal practices at scale: A potential complementary method of surveillance

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Disease in primary care frequently represents a surveillance blind spot, particularly for diseases affecting farm animals. Methods Electronic health records (EHRs) were collected from four farm animal veterinary practices in Wales (February 2024‒January 2025) as part of a pilot study.

Probing the Role of Asn 152 in the Class C β-lactamase AmpC

open access: yes, 2012
AmpC, a class C β-lactamase, is a main cause of antibiotic resistance to cephalosporins in many species of bacteria. The current proposed mechanism of action involves an acyl-intermediate, where the enzyme becomes covalently attached to the drug at ...

Clinically Significant Infections in Surgical Mortality

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Clinically significant infections (CSIs) are a common complication identified in cases of surgical mortality, associated with prolonged hospital stays, unplanned escalation of care and increased risk of death. This study aimed to examine the burden of CSIs in surgical deaths in the Australian Capital Territory and identify ...
