Plasma oxysterols: Altered level of plasma 24-hydroxycholesterol in patients with bipolar disorder
Cholesterol and its oxygenated metabolites, including oxysterols, are intensively investigated as potential players in the pathophysiology of brain disorders. Altered oxysterol levels have been described in patients with numerous neuropsychiatric disorders.

Cholesterol homeostasis: a key to prevent or slow down neurodegeneration [PDF]
Neurodegeneration, a common feature for many brain disorders, has severe consequences on the mental and physical health of an individual. Typically human neurodegenerative diseases are devastating illnesses that predominantly affect elderly people ...

Serum 24S-hydroxycholesterol and hippocampal size in middle-aged normal individuals
The present study assessed the association between serum 24S-hydroxycholesterol (24S-OH-Chol) and 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OH-Chol) and hippocampal volumes in 69 middle-aged cognitively normal individuals. Results showed that subjects with high levels of oxysterols had significantly larger hippocampal volumes than subjects with low levels of ...

Farnesoid X receptor and liver X receptor ligands initiate formation of coated platelets [PDF]
The liver X receptors (LXRs) and farnesoid X receptor (FXR) have been identified in human platelets. Ligands of these receptors have been shown to have nongenomic inhibitory effects on platelet activation by platelet agonists.

Soticlestat, a novel cholesterol 24-hydroxylase inhibitor shows a therapeutic potential for neural hyperexcitation in mice [PDF]
Cholesterol 24-hydroxylase (CH24H) is a brain-specific enzyme that converts cholesterol into 24S-hydroxycholesterol, the primary mechanism of cholesterol catabolism in the brain.

Soticlestat as adjunctive therapy for Lennox–Gastaut syndrome. Abstract Objective There remains a need for new treatments for Lennox–Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with a heterogenous patient population that often requires polytherapy. The phase 3, randomized SKYWAY study (NCT04938427) investigated the efficacy and

Metabolism of 27-, 25- and 24-hydroxycholesterol in rat glial cells and neurons [PDF]
The metabolism of 27-, 25- and 24-hydroxycholesterol in cultures of rat astrocytes, Schwann cells and neurons was studied. 27- and 25-Hydroxycholesterol, but not 24-hydroxycholesterol, underwent 7α-hydroxylation with subsequent oxidation to 7α-hydroxy-3-oxo-Δ4 steroids in all three cell types.
