From WGS to gels: Development and testing of PCR primers targeting toxic Digitalis in support of food safety

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 13, Issue 5, September-October 2025.
Abstract Premise This study capitalized on a library of single‐nucleotide polymorphisms created via whole genome sequencing (WGS) to develop and test a PCR assay for detecting toxic Digitalis species in food products. Complex foods can be difficult to analyze, but safeguarding consumer well‐being and public health necessitates that products regulated ...

A biophysical elucidation for less toxicity of Agglutinin than Abrin-a from the Seeds of Abrus Precatorius in consequence of crystal structure

open access: yesJournal of Biomedical Science, 2010
X-ray crystal structure determination of agglutinin from abrus precatorius in Taiwan is presented. The crystal structure of agglutinin, a type II ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) from the seeds of Abrus precatorius in Taiwan, has been determined from ...

E-N-(2-acetyl-phenyl)-3-phenyl-acrylamide targets abrin and ricin toxicity: Hitting two toxins with one stone.

open access: yesBiomedicine & pharmacotherapy = Biomedecine & pharmacotherapie, 2021
The efficacy of small molecule inhibitors (SMIs) against the enzymatic activity of Shiga toxin prompted the evaluation of their efficacy on related toxins viz. ricin and abrin.

Correlation of abrin-mediated inhibition of protein synthesis and apoptosis

open access: yes, 2019
The plant toxin, abrin, a type-II ribosome inactivating protein, is extremely lethal, the human fatal dose being similar to 1 mu g/kg body weight. Abrin has been classified as an agent for bioterrorism, which is of concern.

Antibodies in breast milk: Pro‐bodies designed for healthy newborn development

open access: yesImmunological Reviews, Volume 328, Issue 1, Page 192-204, November 2024.
Summary This manuscript sheds light on the impact of maternal breast milk antibodies on infant health. Milk antibodies prepare and protect the newborn against environmental exposure, guide and regulate the offspring's immune system, and promote transgenerational adaptation of the immune system to its environment.

Abrin activates DNA damage signaling pathway.

open access: yes, 2014
Phosphorylation of H2AX (γH2AX) was analysed in Jurkat cells (A) treated with abrin (10 ng/ml) for different time intervals (0–10 h) (B) pretreated with broad spectrum caspase inhibitor, z-VAD.fmk for 2 h and then with abrin or (C) with gamma radiation ...

A semiochemical view of the ecology of the seed beetle Acanthoscelides obtectus Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae)

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 184, Issue 1, Page 19-36, January 2024.
The dried bean beetle, Acanthoscelides obtectus, is an economically important pest of stored legumes worldwide. We review the semiochemistry of the mate‐ and host‐finding behaviour of A. obtectus and provide new information about the effect of seed chemistry on the sensory and behavioural ecology of host acceptance and larval development.

Exploring Cytotoxic mRNAs as a Novel Class of Anti-cancer Biotherapeutics

open access: yesMolecular Therapy: Methods & Clinical Development, 2018
New treatments to overcome the obstacles of conventional anti-cancer therapy are a permanent subject of investigation. One promising approach is the application of toxins linked to cell-specific ligands, so-called immunotoxins.

Effect of Abrin on Peptide Chain Initiation [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1977
Cell‐free systems from wheat germ were preincubated before and after addition of immunoglobulin mRNA to generate systems dependent and independent on peptide chain initiation, respectively. When abrin A chain was added, the system dependent on peptide chain initiation was much more strongly inhibited than the system measuring primarily chain elongation.

Detection of Abrin by Electrochemiluminescence Biosensor Based on Screen Printed Electrode

open access: yesSensors, 2018
For the convenience of fast measurement in the outdoor environment, a portable electrochemiluminescence biosensor with the screen-printed electrode as the reaction center was developed, which possesses the characteristics of high sensitivity, small scale,
