Mapping NK cell diversity in response to COVID-19 and mRNA vaccination

open access: yesScientific Reports
Human NK cells exhibit functional heterogeneity, yet the clinical conditions and cellular processes driving this diversity remain insufficiently understood.

The Role of Natural Killer Cells in Autoimmune Diseases

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2021
Natural killer (NK) cells, the large granular lymphocytes differentiated from the common lymphoid progenitors, were discovered in early 1970’s. They are members of innate immunity and were initially defined by their strong cytotoxicity against virus ...

HIF1α is required for NK cell metabolic adaptation during virus infection

open access: yeseLife, 2021
Natural killer (NK) cells are essential for early protection against virus infection and must metabolically adapt to the energy demands of activation. Here, we found upregulation of the metabolic adaptor hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF1α) is a feature of mouse NK cells during murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection in vivo.

Stimulator of interferon genes agonist augmented antitumor immunity of osimertinib in Egfr‐mutated lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining osimertinib with the STING agonist ADU‐S100 activates innate and adaptive immunity to overcome the non‐inflamed microenvironment of Egfr‐mutant lung cancer. This combination increases NK and CD8+ T‐cell infiltration, associated with activation of the STING‐IRF3 pathway and local immunogenic cell death.

Cancer cell‐intrinsic type 1 interferon: production, signaling, and outcomes within sex‐biased, female malignancies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cell‐autonomous roles of interferon type 1 vary based on duration and intensity. While acute, robust signaling results in cancer cell cytotoxic effects, sustained, low‐level signaling is associated with tumor‐promoting effects. This review summarizes current research of IFN‐1 in cancer and within the clinical setting, with an emphasis on female ...

Adaptive natural killer cell expression in response to cytomegalovirus infection in blood and solid cancer

open access: yesHeliyon
Natural Killer (NK) cells are conventionally thought to be an indefinite part of innate immunity. However, in a specific subset of NK cells, recent data signify an extension of their “duties” in immune surveillance and response, having characteristics of

Adaptive NK cells can persist in patients with GATA2 mutation depleted of stem and progenitor cells. [PDF]

open access: yesBlood, 2017
Key Points GATA-2 expression is restricted to hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, leading to NK-cell progenitor deficiency in GATA2 patients.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Increased proliferative response of highly differentiated CD57+NKG2C+NK cells expressing NKG2A

open access: yesМедицинская иммунология
During infection with cytomegalovirus (HCMV), the content of so-called adaptive NK cells with the CD57+NKG2C+ phenotype increases in the peripheral blood, capable of exhibiting specialized functional activity aimed at controlling the infection upon ...
