A role for extracellular amastigotes in the immunopathology of Chagas disease [PDF]
In spite of the growing knowledge obtained about immune control of Trypanosoma cruzi infection, the mechanisms responsible for the variable clinico-pathological expression of Chagas disease remain unknown. In a twist from previous concepts, recent studies indicated that tissue parasitism is a pre-requisite for the development of chronic myocarditis ...

ABSTRACT In patients with atypical ulcers and travel history to endemic areas, a comprehensive diagnostic workup for cutaneous leishmaniasis is imperative. This case confirms Leishmania tropica through combined microscopy, culture, and PCR, leading to successful treatment with systemic glucantime and adjunctive wound care.

The increased incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil is due to a lack of effective disease control measures. In addition to that, no effective treatment exists for canine VL in response to synthetic drugs.

Structural basis of secreted acid phosphatase polymerization in the Leishmania parasite
Abstract Enzymes that assemble into filaments typically transition between protomeric and polymeric states in response to cellular conditions. In contrast, the secreted acid phosphatase (SAP) of Leishmania, one of the most abundant extracellular glycoproteins produced by the parasite and regarded as a major virulence factor in the neglected tropical ...

IFN-γ plays a unique role in protection against low virulent Trypanosoma cruzi strain. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: T. cruzi strains have been divided into six discrete typing units (DTUs) according to their genetic background. These groups are designated T. cruzi I to VI. In this context, amastigotes from G strain (T.

In Vitro Evaluation of Antileishmanial Activity of Commiphora myrrha Essential Oil Nanoliposome
This study investigates the efficacy of nanoliposomal formulations containing myrrh essential oil in combating Leishmania protozoa in laboratory settings. Myrrh essential oil and nanoliposomes were prepared in RPMI‐1640 medium at concentrations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 µg/dL.

Elimination of Leishmania donovani amastigotes by activated macrophages [PDF]
Tissue macrophages are the obligatory host cells for Leishmania donovani, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis. In this study we sought to determine whether activated macrophages, as defined by the functional criterion of tumor cell cytotoxicity, were also able to exert a microbicidal effect on ingested L. donovani amastigotes.

Successful Management of Septic Splenitis in an Abyssinian Cat
A 3.5‐year‐old female neutered Abyssinian with pyrexia of unknown origin and splenomegaly was diagnosed with septic splenitis. Complete resolution of clinical signs followed splenectomy and antibiotic treatment with pradofloxacin. Septic splenitis, although uncommon, should be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients with splenomegaly and ...

Production of amastigotes from metacyclic trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi
Attempts to recreate all the developmental stages of Trypanosoma cruzi in vitro have thus far been met with partial success. It is possible, for instance, to produce trypomastigotes in tissue culture and to obtain metacyclic trypomastigotes in axenic ...

Tegumentary Leishmaniasis Associated With Immune Reconstitution in an HIV Patient—A Case Report
ABSTRACT HIV‐associated Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS) may significantly alter the immunopathological presentation of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL), occasionally causing paradoxical clinical exacerbations. We report the long‐term follow‐up of a 39‐year‐old female coinfected with HIV and disseminated mucocutaneous ...
