Luminescent reporter cells enable the identification of broad‐spectrum antivirals against emerging viruses

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 95, Issue 11, November 2023., 2023
Abstract The emerging viruses SARS‐CoV‐2 and arenaviruses cause severe respiratory and hemorrhagic diseases, respectively. The production of infectious particles of both viruses and virus spread in tissues requires cleavage of surface glycoproteins (GPs) by host proprotein convertases (PCs).

Re‐emergence of Lassa fever in Nigeria: A new challenge for public health authorities

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 6, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
Abstract The Lassa virus is an RNA virus belonging to the Arenaviridae family. It is responsible for Lassa fever, an acute viral zoonosis of the severe hemorrhagic fever type with manifestations of fever, muscle pain, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and chest and abdominal pain. Lassa fever is endemic in West Africa, where the first case was reported in

Multiple infections of zoonotic pathogens in wild Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii)

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 9, Issue 5, Page 2201-2211, September 2023., 2023
Our research revealed the viral and bacterial diversity in wild Brandt's voles. The characterization and distinctive lineage of some rodent‐specific viruses (Cytomegalovirus, PestVs and Lentiviruses) and rodent‐borne bacteria (Leptospira interrogans and Vibrio cholerae) indicates that wild Brandt's voles may harbor a diversity of viruses and bacteria ...

Lassa fever vaccine candidates: A scoping review of vaccine clinical trials

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, Volume 28, Issue 6, Page 420-431, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Objective Lassa fever (LF) is caused by a viral pathogen with pandemic potential. LF vaccines have the potential to prevent significant disease in individuals at risk of infection, but no such vaccine has been licensed or authorised for use thus far.

The N-terminal domain of the arenavirus L protein is an RNA endonuclease essential in mRNA transcription.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2010
Arenaviridae synthesize viral mRNAs using short capped primers presumably acquired from cellular transcripts by a 'cap-snatching' mechanism. Here, we report the crystal structure and functional characterization of the N-terminal 196 residues (NL1) of the

Biodistribution and toxicology evaluation of a recombinant measles Schwarz‐based Lassa vaccine in cynomolgus macaques

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, Volume 43, Issue 5, Page 719-733, May 2023., 2023
Abstract MV‐LASV is an investigational measles Schwarz‐based vaccine for the prevention of Lassa fever. A repeated‐dose toxicity study in cynomolgus macaques was performed to assess the biodistribution and local and systemic toxicological effects. Monkeys received three immunizations of MV‐LASV or saline intramuscularly with a 2‐week interval.

A Lassa Fever Live-Attenuated Vaccine Based on Codon Deoptimization of the Viral Glycoprotein Gene

open access: yesmBio, 2020
Lassa virus (LASV) is endemic in Western Africa and is estimated to infect hundreds of thousands of individuals annually. A considerable number of these infections result in Lassa fever (LF), which is associated with significant morbidity and a case ...

A Lassa Virus Live-Attenuated Vaccine Candidate Based on Rearrangement of the Intergenic Region

open access: yesmBio, 2020
Lassa virus (LASV) poses a significant public health problem within the regions of Lassa fever endemicity in Western Africa. LASV infects several hundred thousand individuals yearly, and a considerable number of Lassa fever cases are associated with high

Xapuri virus, a novel mammarenavirus: natural reassortment and increased diversity between New World viruses

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections, 2018
Mammarenavirus RNA was detected in Musser’s bristly mouse (Neacomys musseri) from the Amazon region, and this detection indicated that rodents were infected with a novel mammarenavirus, with the proposed name Xapuri virus (XAPV), which is ...

Vaccine Candidates against Arenavirus Infections

open access: yesVaccines, 2023
The viral family Arenaviridae contains several members that cause severe, and often lethal, diseases in humans. Several highly pathogenic arenaviruses are classified as Risk Group 4 agents and must be handled in the highest biological containment ...
