The Separation and the Determination of Berberine in the Phellodenron Alkaloids

A Unified Strategy for the Syntheses of the Isoquinolinium Alkaloids Berberine, Coptisine, and Jatrorrhizine [PDF]
Total syntheses of the antibacterial alkaloids berberine, coptisine, and jatrorrhizine have been achieved in four steps through a unified route. The key step of this strategy is an efficient intramolecular Friedel-Crafts alkoxyalkylation which, following oxidation, establishes the isoquinolinium core of these natural products.

Transcriptional profile of theShigella flexneriresponse to an alkaloid: berberine [PDF]
Berberine, a natural isoquinoline alkaloid found in many medicinal herbs, has been shown to be active against a variety of microbial infections. To examine the potential effects of berberine on Shigella flexneri, a whole-genome DNA microarray was constructed and a transcriptome analysis of the cellular responses of S. flexneri when exposed to berberine
