Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Paclitaxel chemotherapy disrupts microbiota-enterohepatic bile acid metabolism in mice

open access: yesGut Microbes
Balanced interactions between the enteric microbiota and enterohepatic organs are essential to bile acid homeostasis, and thus normal gastrointestinal function.

Taurine-conjugated bile acids are the predominant form in hens and have potential impact on lipid metabolism in the liver

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2023
In mammals, bile acids composition varies with species, age, physiological conditions. However, the role of bile acids in the laying cycle of hens and their impact on lipid metabolism in chicken liver is not well understood. This study aimed to elucidate

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Application of a novel tool for diagnosing bile acid diarrhoea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Bile acid diarrhoea (BAD) is a common disease that requires expensive imaging to diagnose. We have tested the efficacy of a new method to identify BAD, based on the detection of differences in volatile organic compounds (VOC) in urine headspace of BAD vs.

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Effect of Soluble Dietary Fiber from Highland Barley Bran on Bile Acid Metabolism in High Fat Diet Mice

open access: yesShipin gongye ke-ji
The processing of highland barley generates a significant quantity of bran, which is abundant in soluble dietary fiber (SDF), yet this by-product remains largely underutilized.

Cholecystectomy promotes the development of colorectal cancer by the alternation of bile acid metabolism and the gut microbiota

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2022
The incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) have been markedly increasing worldwide, causing a tremendous burden to the healthcare system. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the risk factors and pathogenesis of CRC.

Weaving  Klotho into bile acid metabolism [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Investigation, 2005
Bile acids are natural detergents that assist in the absorption and digestion of fats in the intestine. In liver, the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol is regulated by multiple signaling cascades that repress transcription of the gene encoding cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), the rate-limiting enzyme in the classic bile acid synthesis ...
