Deficiency of Mitochondrial Fatty Acid Enzyme, CPT1A, Underlies Airway Epithelial Barrier Dysfunction in Severe Asthma

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial fatty acid enzyme, CPT1A, is deficient in the airway epithelium of severe asthma patients. Restoration of CPT1A expression improved epithelial barrier integrity via increasing mitochondrial respiration and ATP production in airway epithelial cells. Restoration of deficient epithelial CPT1A may represent a new treatment approach for severe

Apoptosis and motor deficits in SPG76 hereditary spastic paraplegia: Calpain 2 inhibition as therapeutic strategy

open access: yesPharmacological Research
SPG76 is a complicated form of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) associated with mutations in the CAPN1 gene. The encoded protein, calpain 1, is a calcium-activated cysteine protease that catalyzes the proteolytic cleavage of a variety of cellular ...

The expression of calpain 1 and calpain 2 in spermatogenic cells and spermatozoa of the mouse [PDF]

open access: yesReproduction, 2005
Abstract There is some evidence suggesting that Ca2+ is involved in processes that occur during the development and function of spermatozoa. Calcium-dependent proteins, such as calmodulin, are expressed during mammalian spermatogenesis further suggesting that Ca2+ takes part in its regulation.

Distinctly altered TRPC3 and TRPC6 expression patterns in human Alzheimer's disease cortex and hippocampus

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
Divergent remodeling of TRPC channels occurs in Alzheimer's disease, with TRPC3 increased in neurons and reactive astrocytes and TRPC6 reduced in pyramidal neurons. These alterations may contribute to calcium dysregulation, neuroinflammation, and synaptic dysfunction during AD progression.

KU80 suppresses endonuclease G activity to preserve genomic integrity

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Under normal conditions, EndoG remains restricted to mitochondria and the genome remains intact. When KU80 is absent, EndoG translocates into the nucleus, where it promotes DNA fragmentation and genomic instability. Thus, this work highlights the importance of KU80 in tightly controlling EndoG localization to preserve genome stability.

Activation of Mitochondrial Calpain 1 Leads to Degradation of PDH

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2018
INTODUCTION Calpain 1 (CPN1) is a ubiquitous calpain including one large subunit and a small regulatory subunit (calpain 4, CPN4). Genetic removal of CPN4 eliminates the CPN1 activity. CPN1 exists in both cytosol and mitochondria.

From biology to biotechnology: Host‐regulation factors from parasitoid wasps are a source of bioactive molecules with translational potential

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Parasitoid wasps deploy maternal and embryonic factors to reprogramme host physiology. Venom, calyx fluid, polydnaviruses, teratocytes and larval secretions act in a coordinated, compartmentalised manner. Host‐regulation factors are promising sources of insecticidal, antimicrobial and bioinspired translational molecules.

Revisiting the calpain hypothesis of learning and memory 40 years later

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience
In 1984, Gary Lynch and Michel Baudry published in Science a novel biochemical hypothesis for learning and memory, in which they postulated that the calcium-dependent protease, calpain, played a critical role in regulating synaptic properties and the ...

Calpain inhibition ameliorates scald burn-induced acute lung injury in rats

open access: yesBurns & Trauma, 2018
Background The molecular pattern of severe burn-induced acute lung injury, characterized by cell structure damage and leukocyte infiltration, remains unknown.

Transcriptomic profiling of gill biopsies to define predictive markers for seawater survival in farmed Atlantic salmon

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Wild Atlantic salmon migrate to sea following completion of a developmental process known as parr‐smolt transformation (PST), which establishes a seawater (SW) tolerant phenotype. Effective imitation of this aspect of anadromous life history is a crucial aspect of commercial salmon production, with current industry practice being marred by ...
