Grape Seed Proanthocyanidins Induce Apoptosis through p53, Bax, and Caspase 3 Pathways

open access: yesNeoplasia: An International Journal for Oncology Research, 2005
Grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSP) have been shown to inhibit skin chemical carcinogenesis and photocarcinogenesis in mice. The mechanisms responsible for the anticarcinogenic effects of GSP are not clearly understood.

Increased Expression of Pyroptosis in Leukocytes of Patients with Kawasaki Disease

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2021
Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a form of febrile vasculitis that primarily occurs in children. It can cause inflammation of the coronary arteries, which leads to aneurysms.

Targeting the MDM2‐MDM4 interaction interface reveals an otherwise therapeutically active wild‐type p53 in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study investigates an alternative approach to reactivating the oncosuppressor p53 in cancer. A short peptide targeting the association of the two p53 inhibitors, MDM2 and MDM4, induces an otherwise therapeutically active p53 with unique features that promote cell death and potentially reduce toxicity towards proliferating nontumor cells.

The role of caspases in Parkinson’s Disease pathogenesis: a brief look at the mitochondrial pathway [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterised by tremor, rigidity, Bradykinesia and reduced facial expression. Development of PD is considered to be the result of deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is due to ...

The endogenous caspase-8 inhibitor c-FLIPL regulates ER morphology and crosstalk with mitochondria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Components of the death receptors-mediated pathways like caspase-8 have been identified in complexes at intracellular membranes to spatially restrict the processing of local targets.

Aberrant expression of nuclear prothymosin α contributes to epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nuclear prothymosin α inhibits epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung cancer by increasing Smad7 acetylation and competing with Smad2 for binding to SNAI1, TWIST1, and ZEB1 promoters. In early‐stage cancer, ProT suppresses TGF‐β‐induced EMT, while its loss in the nucleus in late‐stage cancer leads to enhanced EMT and poor prognosis.

Redox-Mediated Post-Translational Modifications of Proteolytic Enzymes and Their Role in Protease Functioning

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2020
Proteolytic enzymes play a crucial role in metabolic processes, providing the cell with amino acids through the hydrolysis of multiple endogenous and exogenous proteins. In addition to this function, proteases are involved in numerous protein cascades to

Determination of ADP/ATP translocase isoform ratios in malignancy and cellular senescence

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The individual functions of three isoforms exchanging ADP and ATP (ADP/ATP translocases; ANTs) on the mitochondrial membrane remain unclear. We developed a method for quantitatively differentiating highly similar human ANT1, ANT2, and ANT3 using parallel reaction monitoring. This method allowed us to assess changes in translocase levels during cellular
