Chemosensory receptors are expressed primarily in sensory organs, but their expression elsewhere can permit ligand detection in other contexts that contribute to survival. The ability of sweet taste receptors to detect natural sugars, sugar alcohols, and

Brainstem Astrocytes Regulate Estrus‐Dependent Oscillations in Food Intake
DVC astrocytes regulate food intake and caloric balance via modulation of NMDA receptor‐mediated glutamatergic signaling to brainstem DMV motoneurons. In female rats, GFAP‐IR intensity and astrocyte morphological complexity increased during periods of high estrogen levels when food intake was decreased, and chemogenetic manipulation of DVC astrocytes ...

The Scn7a gene encodes for the specific sodium channel NaX, which is considered a primary determinant of sodium sensing in the brain. Only partial data exist describing the NaX distribution pattern and the cell types that express NaX in both the rat and ...

Origin and development of circumventricular organs in living vertebrate
The circumventricular organs (CVOs) function by mediating chemical communication between blood and brain across the blood-brain barrier. Their origin and developmental mechanisms involved are not understood in enough detail due to a lack of molecular markers common for CVOs. These rather small and inconspicuous organs are found in close vicinity to the

How does type 2 diabetes modify the risk of Alzheimer's disease?
Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are both increasing exponentially worldwide. T2D has also been identified as one of 14 modifiable risk factors for dementia, but the mechanism is unknown. T2D could promote dementia via vascular or AD neuropathological changes, and mechanistic hypotheses include central insulin resistance and ...

The central site(s) mediating the cardiovascular actions of the apelin-apelin receptor (APJ) system remains a major question. We hypothesized that the sensory circumventricular organs (CVOs), interfacing between the circulation and deeper brain ...

Hallmarks of brain aging regulated by microRNAs (miRNAs). This graphical abstract illustrates the central role of miRNAs in coordinating key biological processes associated with brain aging. miRNAs regulate multiple interconnected hallmarks, including genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis and impaired ...

Methodological Challenges for Ablation of BMPR1A in Hypothalamic Tanycytes—A Cautionary Tale
Two strategies were used to target BMPR1A in adult hypothalamic tanycytes: (1) inducible Rax‐CreERT2 and (2) AAV‐Dio2‐iCre–mediated recombination. Although robust expression of reporter fluorescence and recombination gel analysis confirmed Cre activity in both models, BMPR1A expression was not reduced in targeted tanycytes.

Enteric Nervous System Damage by Food Contaminants: A Pathway to Neurodegeneration?
ABSTRACT The enteric nervous system (ENS), a key component of the gut–brain axis, has emerged as a critical player in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). It is the first neural system exposed to food contaminants (FCs)—a diverse group of ubiquitous toxic compounds fortuitously present in food derived from production, processing, storage, or ...

Calcitonin Gene‐Related Peptide Signalling in Alcohol Use Disorders: A Scoping Review
ABSTRACT Issue Alcohol use disorders (AUD) represent a major global health burden, and currently available pharmacological treatments show limited and heterogeneous efficacy. Calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP) is a pleiotropic neuropeptide involved in stress regulation and neuroimmune signalling, and is an established therapeutic target in migraine.
