Nanofiber PVA‐Based Membranes Incorporating Functionalized Spanish Broom Derivatives for Sustainable Water Purification

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
This study investigates Spanish broom (Spartium junceum) as a renewable source for electrospun composite membranes in sustainable water purification. MCC and biochar were functionalized with eco‐friendly precursors and nanomaterials (i.e., HNT, β‐CDs) to develop hybrid PVA nanofiber composites.

Novel insights into the treatment of complement-mediated hemolytic anemias

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Hematology, 2019
Complement-mediated hemolytic anemias can either be caused by deficiencies in regulatory complement components or by autoimmune pathogenesis that triggers inappropriate complement activation.

An Open‐Label Phase 1b Study of the Safety, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Clinical Activity of ANX005 in Patients with Huntington's Disease

open access: yesMovement Disorders, EarlyView.
Complement activation is implicated in Huntington's disease; ANX005 is a potent inhibitor of component C1q. ANX005 exhibited a generally manageable safety profile with rapid reduction in C1q in the cerebrospinal fluid. Functional ability on composite Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale and total functional capacity was maintained, with potential ...

The Role of Cold Atmospheric Plasma in Surface Modification and Adhesion Behavior of Polypropylene/Flax Biocomposites

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Effects of plasma surface treatment on adhesive bonding of PP/flax biocomposites. ABSTRACT The emphasis on environmental sustainability has accelerated the adoption of biocomposites as alternatives to synthetic composites. However, their low surface energy may limit adhesion in bonding applications.

Auger Parameter Analysis for TiN and AlN Thin Films via Combined In Situ XPS and HAXPES

open access: yesSurface and Interface Analysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Auger parameter analysis provides in‐depth information about electronic and chemical bonding properties of TiN and AlN thin films, which are relevant across a wide range of technologies. Meaningful interpretation and analysis of Auger parameter of these materials have been hindered due to, among other reasons, the absence of reliable ...

Deciphering the fine details of C1 assembly and activation mechanisms: 'mission impossible'?

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2014
The classical complement pathway is initiated by the large (~800kDa) and flexible multimeric C1 complex. Its catalytic function is triggered by the hetero-tetramer of proteases C1r2s2, which is associated to the C1q sensing unit, a complex assembly of 18

Substrate‐Tight Graphene Transmembrane‐nanofluidic Devices

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that the covalent coupling of a pyrene layer to a silicon nitride substrate using silane and peptide chemistry increases the adhesion of graphene to the substrate and prevents the delamination of graphene. 76.2% of the devices with free‐standing graphene are successful devices for ion transport measurement in 0.1 M HCl ...

Surface Engineering of Ti3C2Tx MXenes via Silanol Functionalization for Improved Electrochemical Performance

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
This study explores the covalent functionalization of Ti3C2Tx using 5,5′‐bis(triisopropoxysilyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine in different solvents, revealing that only m‐xylene enables effective covalent bonding, ensuring structural stability and preventing layer swelling.

Data comparing the kinetics of procollagen type I processing by bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP-1) with and without procollagen C-proteinase enhancer 1 (PCPE-1)

open access: yesData in Brief, 2016
This article provides kinetic constants for C-terminal processing of procollagen type I by bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP-1; the major procollagen C-proteinase), a reaction stimulated by the connective tissue glycoprotein procollagen C-proteinase ...
