Enhancement of Morpho‐Physiological, Physiological, and Antioxidant Capacity of Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) Under Water Deficit Using ZnO Nanoparticles and Magnesium Sulfate: Implications for Saffron Yield

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 8, August 2026.
ZnO nanoparticles and MgSO4 synergistically alleviated drought‐induced damage in saffron. Foliar application improved relative water content and antioxidant enzyme activity. Photosynthetic performance and membrane stability were enhanced under water deficit. Moderate drought combined with ZnO‐NPs and MgSO4 maximized saffron productivity. ABSTRACT Water

SIRT Family: Biological Functions and Therapeutic Targets

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 8, August 2026.
SIRT1–SIRT7 networks from transgenic mice to human‑relevant therapeutic targets. SIRT1–SIRT7 form an isoform‑, organ‑, and disease‑specific regulatory network. Transgenic Sirt1–7 mouse models define central regulatory SIRTs (SIRT1, SIRT3, SIRT6), context‑dependent modifiers (SIRT2, SIRT4, SIRT5, SIRT7), and their key mechanisms and target organs. These

Evaluation of Crocins in Cheeses Made with Saffron by UHPLC

open access: yes, 2018
Saffron is a widespread consumed spice with potential health promoting compounds. In dairy technologies it is often used to enhance color and flavor of cheeses, so it would be recommended to know the content of saffron functional compounds in cheese made

Multi‐Induction Strategies in Crops: Mechanisms, Synergistic Effects, and Sustainable Applications for Enhanced Secondary Metabolite Production

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 4, July 2026.
This review analyzes single/combined abiotic (light, water, nutrients, hormones) and biotic (microbes, yeast) elicitors regulating signaling, gene expression, and metabolism to boost plant secondary metabolites. It highlights synergistic multielicitor strategies for crop quality and functional foods, while critically addressing current limitations and ...

Verbascum species as a new source of saffron apocarotenoids and molecular tools for the biotechnological production of crocins and picrocrocin

open access: yes
Crocins are glucosylated apocarotenoids present in flowers and fruits of a few plant species, including saffron, gardenia, and Buddleja. The biosynthesis of crocins in these plants has been unraveled, and the enzymes engineered for the production of ...

Discovery and LC-MS Characterization of New Crocins in Gardeniae Fructus and Their Neuroprotective Potential

open access: yes, 2017
Ten new crocins, neocrocins B–J (1–9) and 13-cis-crocetin-8′-O-β-d-gentiobioside (14), along with 10 known crocins, were isolated from the fruits of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (Gardeniae Fructus).

Crocins, the active constituents of Crocus sativus L., counteracted apomorphine-induced performance deficits in the novel object recognition task, but not novel object location task, in rats

open access: yes, 2017
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disease that affects nearly 1% of the population worldwide. Several lines of evidence suggest that the dopaminergic (DAergic) system might be compromised in schizophrenia.

In vitro starch digestibility and fate of crocins in pasta enriched with saffron extract [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This work aims to study the effect of the addition of saffron extract on fresh pasta in-vitro digestibility. Fresh pasta was formulated with different concentrations of saffron extracts (0.2 and 0.4 %w/w), cooked at two different times (1.5 and 3 min ...

Crocins: The active constituents of crocus sativus l. stigmas, exert significant cytotoxicity on tumor cells in vitro

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Tumors of the childhood are considered to be grave and devastating pa-thologies, with high mortality rates. Current therapeutic options like cytotoxic drugs and radiotherapy target both healthy and malignant cells, thus resulting in long-term
