Old and new damage‐associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in autoimmune diseases

open access: yesRheumatology & Autoimmunity, 2022
All organisms living in complex environments have evolved effective mechanisms of dynamic responses to extracellular stimuli. The immune system activates when damaged or injured cells release damage‐associated molecular patterns (DAMPs).

Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and the DNA Damage Response:pATM Expression Patterns in Pre-Malignant and Malignant Keratinocyte Skin Lesions

open access: yes, 2011
Recent evidence suggests that an initial barrier to the emergence of tumours is a DNA damage response that evokes a counter-response which arrests the growth of, or eliminates, damaged cells.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Research progress on damage ⁃ associated molecular patterns in intracerebral hemorrhage

open access: yesChinese Journal of Contemporary Neurology and Neurosurgery, 2021
After the onset of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), the immune storm causes the massive death of neurons and their supporting cells. Cytotoxic substances such as hemoglobin, heme and iron ions released by red blood cells lysis also promote death of ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Role of Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs/Alarmins) in Severe Ocular Allergic Diseases

open access: yes, 2022
Severe ocular allergic diseases, such as atopic keratoconjunctivitis and vernal keratoconjunctivitis, cause severe allergic inflammation in the conjunctiva and corneal epithelial damage, resulting in visual disturbances. The involvement of damage (danger)

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Peptide Aggregation Induced Immunogenic Rupture (PAIIR)

open access: yesAdvanced Science, 2022
Immunogenic cell death (ICD) arises when cells are under stress, and their membranes are damaged. They release damage‐associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that stimulate and drive the type and magnitude of the immune response.
