Pharmacokinetics of intranasal amiloride in healthy volunteers
Abstract Anxiety and panic disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States and lack effective treatment options. Acid‐sending ion channels (ASICs) in the brain were shown to be associated with fear conditioning and anxiety responses and therefore are potential targets for treating panic disorder.

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are proton-gated members of the epithelial sodium channel/degenerin (ENaC/DEG) superfamily of ion channels and are expressed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Hyperactivation of the Mammalian Degenerin MDEG Promotes Caspase-8 Activation and Apoptosis [PDF]
Intracellular calcium overload plays a critical role in numerous pathological syndromes such as heart failure, brain ischemia, and stroke. Hyperactivation of the acid-sensing ion channels including degenerin/epithelial amiloride-sensitive sodium (DEG/ENaC) channels has been shown to elevate intracellular calcium and cause subsequent neuronal cell death

The diverse functions of the DEG/ENaC family: linking genetic and physiological insights
Abstract figure legend Schematic illustration of the diverse modulators and stimuli that influence DEG/ENaC function (blue arrows) and the diverse range of functions in which they have been implicated (green arrows), in an array of animals, exemplified by those depicted. Created with Biorender.com.

Identification and analysis of putative homologues of mechanosensitive channels in pathogenic protozoa. [PDF]
Mechanosensitive channels play important roles in the physiology of many organisms, and their dysfunction can affect cell survival. This suggests that they might be therapeutic targets in pathogenic organisms. Pathogenic protozoa lead to diseases such as

A Conceptual Review of Naturally Occurring Toxins and Venoms as Peptide Blockers to Combat Chronic Low Back Pain. [PDF]
This review explores the therapeutic potential of naturally occurring venom‐derived peptides, particularly from reptiles and insects, as novel calcium channel blockers for managing chronic low back pain caused by intervertebral disc degeneration.

member of the Degenerin/Epithelial Sodium Channel family [PDF]
The mechanosensory neurons of Drosophila larvae are demonstrably activated by diverse mechanical stimuli, but the mechanisms underlying this function are not completely understood.

The Genetic Architecture of Degenerin/Epithelial Sodium Channels inDrosophila
AbstractDegenerin/epithelial sodium channels (DEG/ENaC) represent a large family of animal-specific membrane proteins. Although the physiological functions of most family members are not known, some have been shown to act as nonvoltage gated, amiloride-sensitive sodium channels.

A major gap in our understanding of sensation is how a single sensory neuron can differentially respond to a multitude of different stimuli (polymodality), such as propio- or nocisensation.

Role of ENaC/Degenerin Family in Glioblastoma Multiforme
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the most aggressive of the primary brain tumors. High‐grade gliomas express different subunits of the Epithelial Sodium Channel (ENaC)/Degenerin (Deg) family ( Berdiev et al., J. Biol.
