진핵세포에서 소포체 기능이상은 소포체 스트레스를 유발한다. 이때 세포는 UPR (unfolded protein response)이라 칭하는 반응을 통해 소포체 기능을 보호한다. UPR은 소포체 스트레스가 지속되는 동안 소포체에 축적된 미성숙 단백질(unfolded proteins)을 제거하기 위하여 autophagy와 proteasome같은 단백질 분해 시스템과 함께 작용한다.
