Periodontal microbiology and microbial etiology of periodontal diseases: Historical concepts and contemporary perspectives

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract This narrative review summarizes the collective knowledge on periodontal microbiology, through a historical timeline that highlights the European contribution in the global field. The etiological concepts on periodontal disease culminate to the ecological plaque hypothesis and its dysbiosis‐centered interpretation.

Similar cytokine induction profiles of a novel streptococcal exotoxin, MF, and pyrogenic exotoxins A and B [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1994
The cytokine production induced by a newly discovered streptococcal exotoxin, MF, and the pyrogenic exotoxins SpeA and SpeB was determined by in vitro stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from healthy blood donors. The induction and kinetics of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha), IL-1 beta, IL-1 receptor antagonist, IL-2, IL-

Molecular studies of Pseudomonas exotoxin A gene [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1986
A 2.7-kilobase DNA fragment carrying the entire exotoxin A (ETA) structural gene was divided into three nonoverlapping probes. Two probes covering the ETA structural gene were used in colony hybridization experiments to determine whether sequences homologous to the ETA gene could be detected in genera other than Pseudomonas or in Pseudomonas species ...

Isolation and characterizations of a novel recombinant scFv antibody against exotoxin A of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2021
Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the leading cause of nosocomial infections, especially in people with a compromised immune system. Targeting virulence factors by neutralizing antibodies is a novel paradigm for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant ...

APseudomonas aeruginosaalginate-exotoxin A conjugate that elicits anti-alginate and exotoxin A-neutralizing antibodies [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1991
Pseudomonas aeruginosa alginate was covalently coupled to exotoxin A by reductive amination using adipic acid dihydrazide as spacer. The conjugate was composed of 25% alginate and 75% exotoxin A and possessed an average molecular mass higher than 700 kDa as determined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

The role of bacterial secretion systems in the virulence of Gram-negative airway pathogens associated with cystic fibrosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal inherited disorder in Caucasians. It is caused by mutation of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene.

Microfluidics-based liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry multiple reaction monitoring approach for the relative quantification of Burkholderia cenocepacia secreted virulence factors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Rationale: Burkholderia cenocepacia is an opportunistic pathogen that is commonly isolated from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Quorum sensing has been suggested to play a role in the activity of type II and type VI secretion systems and the release ...

Molecular cloning and expression of novel fibroblast growth factor-2 conjugated with immunodominant domains of pseudomonas exotoxin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Angiogenesis is very important in cancer growth and metastasis. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) as one of the most important angiogenesis factors is an attractive target for cancer vaccine.

Riboflavin: The Health Benefits of a Forgotten Natural Vitamin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Riboflavin (RF) is a water-soluble member of the B-vitamin family. Sufficient dietary and supplemental RF intake appears to have a protective effect on various medical conditions such as sepsis, ischemia etc., while it also contributes to the reduction ...

Phase I clinical study of the recombinant antibody toxin scFv(FRP5)-ETA specific for the ErbB2/HER2 receptor in patients with advanced solid malignomas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Introduction: ScFv(FRP5)-ETA is a recombinant antibody toxin with binding specificity for ErbB2 (HER2). It consists of an N-terminal single-chain antibody fragment (scFv), genetically linked to truncated Pseudomonas exotoxin A (ETA).
