Effect of dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid on markers of calcium and bone metabolism in healthy adult men.

open access: yes, 2005
INTRODUCTION: Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown to positively influence calcium and bone metabolism in experimental animals and cells in culture, but there are limited human data available.

Mammalian Δ-6 Fatty Acid Desaturase :

open access: yesJournal of Japan Oil Chemists' Society, 2000
Δ-6 Fatty acid desaturase was noted to catalyze the conversion of linoleic acid to γ-linolenic acid and α-linolenic acid to n-3 octadecatetraenoic acid through the insertion of a double bond at the Δ-6 position of the fatty acid substrate. In mammals and paticularly in humans, this is the first rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of polyunsaturated ...

Δ-6 Desaturase substrate competition: dietary linoleic acid (18:2n-6) has only trivial effects on α-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) bioconversion in the teleost rainbow trout.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
It is generally accepted that, in vertebrates, omega-3 (n-3) and omega-6 (n-6) poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) compete for Δ-6 desaturase enzyme in order to be bioconverted into long-chain PUFA (LC-PUFA).

The role of iron in normal and impaired testicular function

open access: yesAndrology, EarlyView.
Abstract Iron plays a critical role in testicular physiology, impacting spermatogenesis, testosterone production, and overall testicular function. Iron homeostasis is maintained through systemic and cellular regulatory mechanisms, including hepcidin‐mediated systemic iron control and the iron‐responsive element/iron regulatory protein (IRE/IRP) system ...

Preeclampsia is associated with compromized maternal synthesis of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids leading to offspring deficiency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Obesity and excessive lipolysis are implicated in preeclampsia (PE). Intrauterine growth restriction is associated with low maternal body mass index and decreased lipolysis.

Is there a role for cannabidiol in obesity, metabolic syndrome and binge eating?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most abundant phytocannabinoids isolated from the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is a lipophilic, non‐intoxicating substance that differently from Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9‐THC) does not present the typical profile of a drug of abuse.

Fatty acid metabolism in marine fish: Low activity of fatty acyl Δ5 desaturation in gilthead sea bream ( Sparus aurata ) cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Marine fish are known to have an absolute dietary requirement for C20 and C22 highly unsaturated fatty acids. Previous studies using cultured cell lines indicated that underlying this requirement in marine fish was either a deficiency in fatty acyl Δ5 ...

Effects of glucagon and dibutyryl adenosine 3‘, 5‘-cyclic monophosphate on oxidative desaturation of fatty acids in the rat

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1975
The present work was undertaken to study the effect of anti-insulinic and glycogenolytic factors on the oxidative desaturation of fatty acids. The effects of glucagon and dibutyryl cyclic AMP on the desaturation of linoleic acid to γ-linolenic acid, α ...

SCD2 Alleviates Diabetes‐Associated Cognitive Dysfunction by Improving Microglial Lipid Metabolism

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
This study reveals a novel mechanism of microglial metabolic dysfunction in diabetic cognitive impairment. Defective SCD2 disrupts monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) metabolism, triggering mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation dysfunction and leading to abnormal lipid droplet accumulation (marked by PLIN2).

The Desaturase Gene Family is Crucially Required for Fatty Acid Metabolism and Survival of the Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Desaturases are essentially required for unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) biosynthesis. We identified 10 genes encoding putative desaturases in the transcriptome database of the brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens.
