Membrane fatty acid desaturase: biosynthesis, mechanism, and architecture

open access: yesApplied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2022
Fatty acid desaturase catalyzes the desaturation reactions by inserting double bonds into the fatty acyl chain, producing unsaturated fatty acids, which play a vital part in the synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Fatty acid desaturases from the microalga Thalassiosira pseudonana [PDF]

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, 2005
Analysis of a draft nuclear genome sequence of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana revealed the presence of 11 open reading frames showing significant similarity to functionally characterized fatty acid front-end desaturases.

Chimeras of delta6-fatty acid and delta8-sphingolipid desaturases

open access: yesBiochemical and biophysical research communications, 2000
The Borago officinalis Delta6 fatty acid desaturase (Boofd6) shares 58% identity in its amino acid sequence with Boofd8, a Delta8 sphingolipid desaturase from the same plant species.

Fatty Acid Desaturases, Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Regulation, and Biotechnological Advances [PDF]

open access: yesNutrients, 2016
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are considered to be critical nutrients to regulate human health and development, and numerous fatty acid desaturases play key roles in synthesizing PUFAs. Given the lack of delta-12 and -15 desaturases and the low levels of conversion to PUFAs, humans must consume some omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in their diet ...

Relationship between NAFLD and coronary artery disease: A Mendelian randomization study

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Background and Aims There is an ongoing debate on whether NAFLD is an active contributor or an innocent bystander in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of the present study was to assess the causal relationship between NAFLD and CAD.

Lipocalin‐2 activates hepatic stellate cells and promotes nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in high‐fat diet–fed Ob/Ob mice

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Graphical summary of obesity‐induced NASH progression by LCN2 targeted to HSC activation. Abstract Background and Aims In obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, leptin promotes insulin resistance and contributes to the progression of NASH via activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs).

Essential lipid autacoids rewire mitochondrial energy efficiency in metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Increased liver content of DHA‐derived small lipid autacoids (i.e resolvin D1 and maresin 1) associates with enhanced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid β‐oxidation and bioenergetic metabolic flux. These features provide hepatic protection from steatotic, pro‐inflammatory and fibrogenic insults.

The role of fatty acid desaturases in epidermal metabolism [PDF]

open access: yesDermato-Endocrinology, 2011
The lipid composition of skin is important to a variety of functions served by this organ. Therefore, skin expresses multiple enzymes that synthesize and metabolize lipids. An important class of lipid metabolism enzymes expressed in skin is the lipid desaturases.

Emergence of highly profibrotic and proinflammatory Lrat+Fbln2+ HSC subpopulation in alcoholic hepatitis

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Lrat+ quiescent hepatic stellate cells (qHSC) give rise to Lrat+Fbln2+ activated HSC (aHSC) in alcohol‐associated hepatitis and this subpopulation is highly profibrotic, inflammatory, and immunoregulatory based on their single cell transcriptomic profile. Abstract Background and Aims Relative roles of HSCs and portal fibroblasts in alcoholic hepatitis (

Association between increased visceral fat area and alterations in plasma fatty acid profile in overweight subjects: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2017
Background Visceral fat accumulation in overweight status has been resulted in changes of fatty acid profiles. The fatty acids profiles can be altered by fatty acid desaturase; the activity of which is highly associated with obesity and other metabolic ...
