Dynamic fibronectin assembly and remodeling by leader neural crest cells prevents jamming in collective cell migration [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Collective cell migration plays an essential role in vertebrate development, yet the extent to which dynamically changing microenvironments influence this phenomenon remains unclear. Observations of the distribution of the extracellular matrix (ECM) component fibronectin during the migration of loosely connected neural crest cells (NCCs) lead us to ...

Spatial and temporal dynamics of RhoA activities of single breast tumor cells in a 3D environment revealed by a machine learning-assisted FRET technique [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
One of the hallmarks of cancer cells is their exceptional ability to migrate within the extracellular matrix (ECM) for gaining access to the circulatory system, a critical step of cancer metastasis. RhoA, a small GTPase, is known to be a key molecular switch that toggles between actomyosin contractility and lamellipodial protrusion during cell ...

Changing the mechanical unfolding pathway of FnIII10 by tuning the pulling strength [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, Volume 96, Issue 2, 429-441, 21 January 2009, 2008
We investigate the mechanical unfolding of the tenth type III domain from fibronectin, FnIII10, both at constant force and at constant pulling velocity, by all-atom Monte Carlo simulations. We observe both apparent two-state unfolding and several unfolding pathways involving one of three major, mutually exclusive intermediate states.

Plasticity of hydrogen bond networks regulates mechanochemistry of cell adhesion complexes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Mechanical forces acting on cell adhesion receptor proteins regulate a range of cellular functions by formation and rupture of non-covalent interactions with ligands. Typically, force decreases the lifetimes of intact complexes (slip-bonds), making the discovery that these lifetimes can also be prolonged ("catch-bonds"), a surprise.

Models of fibronectin. [PDF]

open access: yesThe EMBO Journal, 1987
The radius of gyration of human plasma fibronectin was determined by light scattering both under conditions in which the molecule is in an extended conformation (ionic strength 1.01 M, pH 8) and close to its native, more compact conformation (ionic strength 0.16 M, pH 8).

Monitoring of Wild Pseudomonas Biofilm Strain Conditions Using Statistical Characterisation of Scanning Electron Microscopy Images [PDF]

open access: yesIndustrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, volume 56, no. 34, pages 9496-9512, 2017, 2018
The present paper proposes a novel method of quantification of the variation in biofilm architecture, in correlation with the alteration of growth conditions that include, variations of substrate and conditioning layer. The polymeric biomaterial serving as substrates are widely used in implants and indwelling medical devices, while the plasma proteins ...

Circulating fibronectin and fibronectin receptor in children with pertussis. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Pathology, 1994
To determine concentrations of fibronectin and fibronectin receptor in children with pertussis.Concentrations of circulating fibronectin and serum fibronectin receptor were detected in eight children affected by pertussis, eight children with acute upper or lower respiratory tract infections, and in 14 healthy control children.

The power of microRNA regulation—insights into immunity and metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
MicroRNAs are emerging as crucial regulators at the intersection of metabolism and immunity. This review examines how miRNAs coordinate glucose and lipid metabolism while simultaneously modulating T‐cell development and immune responses. Moreover, it highlights how cutting‐edge artificial intelligence applications can identify miRNA biomarkers ...

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Evolving roles and dynamics for catch and slip bonds during adhesion cluster maturation [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 103, 032402 (2021), 2019
Focal adhesions are the loci of cellular adhesion to the extracellular matrix. At these sites, various integrins forge connections between the intracellular cytoskeleton and the outside world: large patches of multiple types of integrins together grip hold of collagen, fibronectin and other extracellular matrix components.
