The Physical Mechanisms of Drosophila Gastrulation: Mesoderm and Endoderm Invagination

open access: yesGenetics, 2019
A critical juncture in early development is the partitioning of cells that will adopt different fates into three germ layers: the ectoderm, the mesoderm, and the endoderm.

Analysis of Gene Expression in Aedes aegypti Suggests Changes in Early Genetic Control of Mosquito Development

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aedes aegypti, a critical vector for tropical diseases, poses significant challenges for studying its embryogenesis due to difficulties in removing its rigid chorion and achieving effective fixation for in situ hybridization. Here, we present novel methodologies for fixation, dechorionation, DAPI staining, and in situ hybridization, enabling ...

Zebrafish Gastrulation

open access: yesAnnual Review of Cell and Developmental Biology
The primordial body architecture of vertebrates is established during gastrulation, a critical period of development characterized by the emergence of the three germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm) and the formation of an embryo with clearly identifiable dorso-ventral and anterior-posterior axes.

High-throughput micropatterning platform reveals Nodal-dependent bisection of peri-gastrulation–associated versus preneurulation-associated fate patterning

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2019
In vitro models of postimplantation human development are valuable to the fields of regenerative medicine and developmental biology. Here, we report characterization of a robust in vitro platform that enabled high-content screening of multiple human ...

The Embryonic Development of the Cotylean Polyclad Phrikoceros jannetae

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Polyclads exhibit distinct developmental modes ranging from direct to indirect development, with several transitional stages also recognised. The existence of an indirect developmental mode in polyclads with a planktonic life history stage in the form of a free‐swimming larva is unique among all free‐living flatworms and makes polyclads a ...

Motor neuron development in zebrafish is altered by brief (5-hr) exposures to THC (∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (cannabidiol) during gastrulation

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
Marijuana is one of the most commonly used illicit recreational drugs and is widely used for medicinal purposes. The psychoactive ingredient in marijuana is ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆9-THC), whereas the major non-psychoactive ingredient is cannabidiol ...

Establishment of Human Formative Pluripotent Stem Cell‐Like Cells Exhibiting Amniotic Differentiation Potentials

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
The hfPSC‐LCs could be established from naïve hESCs, conventional hESCs, hiPSCs, and human blastocysts. The hfPSC‐LCs hold robust capacity for three germ layers, hPGCLCs, and hALPCs. ABSTRACT Human embryos undergo pivotal morphogenetic remodelling shortly after implantation. The understanding of this crucial stage is severely impeded by the scarcity of

When proteases reshape barriers: Basement membrane remodelling in development, wound healing and tumour progression

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Basement membrane (BM) homeostasis relies on a balance between integrity, controlled remodelling and pathological degradation. Increased protease expression beneath the BM, along with reduced levels of endogenous protease inhibitors, drives the transition from a continuous, protective barrier to a discontinuous interface.

CTCF looping is established during gastrulation in medaka embryos

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2018
Genome architecture plays a critical role in gene regulation, but how the structures seen in mature cells emerge during embryonic development remains poorly understood.
