Hair necessities: Hair cell differentiation and regeneration [PDF]

open access: yesThe Biochemist, 2002
Human hearing is governed by approximately 15 500 mechanosensory hair cells in each ear. These cells are located within the organ of Corti, the elongated auditory sensory epithelium that is stretched inside the coiled cochleae of the inner ear. Despite the structural diversity between the organs of hearing throughout the animal kingdom, hair cells are ...

Regulation of hair cell and stomatal size by a hair cell-specific peroxidase in the grass Brachypodium distachyon. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The leaf epidermis is the outermost cell layer forming the interface between plants and the atmosphere that must both provide a robust barrier against (a)biotic stressors and facilitate carbon dioxide uptake and leaf transpiration.1 To achieve these ...

Recent advances in hair cell regeneration research [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Otolaryngology & Head & Neck Surgery, 2008
This review discusses recent progress in research that seeks to understand the regeneration of hair cells and highlights findings that may hold importance for the eventual development of regenerative therapies for hearing and balance impairments.Signaling via the Notch receptor and the basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors has important roles in

As a carrier–transporter for hair follicle reconstitution, platelet-rich plasma promotes proliferation and induction of mouse dermal papilla cells

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Morphogenesis of hair follicles during development and in hair reconstitution assays involves complex interactions between epithelial cells and dermal papilla cells (DPCs).

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Cisplatin ototoxicity and hair cell regeneration in the zebrafish lateral line [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Hair cell death and regeneration on the zebrafish posterior lateral line was investigated after cisplatin administration. Hair cell regeneration was first observed by 24 hours of recovery and was further analyzed after specific recovery intervals ...

Kremen1 regulates the regenerative capacity of support cells and mechanosensory hair cells in the zebrafish lateral line

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Mechanosensory hair cells in the inner ear mediate the sensations of hearing and balance, and in the specialized lateral line sensory system of aquatic vertebrates, the sensation of water movement.

Circulating microRNA signatures of cachexia and cancer in Canis familiaris as a comparative oncology model for human disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers of cachexia and sex‐specific cancer in senior dogs. In 25 client‐owned dogs, four circulating miRNAs (miR‐15a, miR‐15b, miR‐16, miR‐140) were downregulated in cachexia, with miR‐16 the strongest individual biomarker (AUC = 0.899).

Precise genetic control of ATOH1 enhances maturation of regenerated hair cells in the mature mouse utricle

open access: yesNature Communications
Vestibular hair cells are mechanoreceptors critical for detecting head position and motion. In mammals, hair cell loss causes vestibular dysfunction as spontaneous regeneration is nearly absent.

"Properties of Vibrissa follicle cells during follicle development and regeneration, and their interactions with embryonic stem cells." [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Follicular dermal cells possess properties that regulate induction of follicle formation, hair growth, and follicle end bulb regeneration after amputation.
