The late endosome-resident lipid bis(monoacylglycero)phosphate is a cofactor for Lassa virus fusion.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2021
Arenavirus entry into host cells occurs through a low pH-dependent fusion with late endosomes that is mediated by the viral glycoprotein complex (GPC). The mechanisms of GPC-mediated membrane fusion and of virus targeting to late endosomes are not well ...

Membrane Hemifusion Is a Stable Intermediate of Exocytosis [PDF]

open access: yesDevelopmental Cell, 2007
Membrane fusion during exocytosis requires that two initially distinct bilayers pass through a hemifused intermediate in which the proximal monolayers are shared. Passage through this intermediate is an essential step in the process of secretion, but is difficult to observe directly in vivo. Here we study membrane fusion in the sea urchin egg, in which

Asymmetric Bilayers by Hemifusion: Method and Leaflet Behaviors [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2019
We describe a new method to prepare asymmetric giant unilamellar vesicles (aGUVs) via hemifusion. Hemifusion of giant unilamellar vesicles and a supported lipid bilayer, triggered by calcium, promotes the lipid exchange of the fused outer leaflets mediated by lipid diffusion.

Evolution of the Hemifused Intermediate on the Pathway to Membrane Fusion [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2012
The pathway to membrane fusion in synthetic and biological systems is thought to pass through hemifusion, in which the outer leaflets are fused while the inner leaflets engage in a hemifusion diaphragm (HD). Fusion has been proposed to be completed by lysis of the expanded HD that matures from a localized stalklike initial connection.

Line-tension controlled mechanism for influenza fusion. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Our molecular simulations reveal that wild-type influenza fusion peptides are able to stabilize a highly fusogenic pre-fusion structure, i.e. a peptide bundle formed by four or more trans-membrane arranged fusion peptides.

Exploiting Herpes Simplex Virus Entry for Novel Therapeutics

open access: yesViruses, 2013
Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) is associated with a variety of diseases such as genital herpes and numerous ocular diseases. At the global level, high prevalence of individuals who are seropositive for HSV, combined with its inconspicuous infection, remains ...

Direct Visualization of Large and Protein-free Hemifusion Diaphragms [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2009
Fusion of cellular membranes is a ubiquitous biological process requiring remodeling of two phospholipid bilayers. We believe it is very likely that merging of membranes proceeds via similar sequential intermediates. Contacting membranes form a stalk between the proximal leaflets that expands radially into an hemifusion diaphragm (HD) and subsequently ...

Sequential conformational rearrangements in flavivirus membrane fusion

open access: yeseLife, 2014
The West Nile Virus (WNV) envelope protein, E, promotes membrane fusion during viral cell entry by undergoing a low-pH triggered conformational reorganization.

Myomerger promotes fusion pore by elastic coupling between proximal membrane leaflets and hemifusion diaphragm

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Myomerger mediates the transition from the early hemifusion stage to complete fusion during the formation of multinucleated muscle cells. Here, authors use theoretical modeling and cell fusion experiments to show that Myomerger promotes a fusion pore by ...

Role of HIV Gp41 mediated fusion/hemifusion in bystander apoptosis [PDF]

open access: yesCellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 2008
Mechanisms of HIV-mediated CD4+ T cell loss leading to immunodeficiency are amongst the most extensively studied yet unanswered questions in HIV biology. The level of CD4+ T cell depletion in HIV infected patients far exceeds the number of infected T cells, suggesting an indirect mechanism of HIV pathogenesis termed bystander cell death.
