Phosphorylation of yeast hexokinases [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1990
We show by the use of 32P‐labeling in vivo that hexokinase 2 and hexokinase 1 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae are phosphoproteins. The highest labeling was after incubation in medium with a low concentration of glucose, when labeling appears to be predominant even without use of immunoprecipitation.

The silicon trypanosome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
African trypanosomes have emerged as promising unicellular model organisms for the next generation of systems biology. They offer unique advantages, due to their relative simplicity, the availability of all standard genomics techniques and a long history

Tubulin βII and βIII Isoforms as the Regulators of VDAC Channel Permeability in Health and Disease

open access: yesCells, 2019
In recent decades, there have been several models describing the relationships between the cytoskeleton and the bioenergetic function of the cell. The main player in these models is the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), located in the mitochondrial

Unmasking the Warburg Effect: Unleashing the Power of Enzyme Inhibitors for Cancer Therapy

open access: yesDrugs and Drug Candidates, 2023
The Warburg effect (or aerobic glycolysis), which was first described in 1926 by Otto Heinrich Warburg, consists of the change in glucose metabolism in cancer cells.

Effects of branched-chain amino acids on glucose uptake and lactose synthesis rates in bovine mammary epithelial cells and lactating mammary tissue slices

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2022
: Even though supplementations of essential AA (EAA) are often related to increased lactose yields in dairy cows, underlying mechanisms connecting EAA availability to the mammary glands and lactose synthesis are poorly understood.

Erythrocytes as Carriers of Therapeutic Enzymes. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Therapeutic enzymes are administered for the treatment of a wide variety of diseases. They exert their effects through binding with a high affinity and specificity to disease-causing substrates to catalyze their conversion to a non-noxious product, to ...

miRNAs link metabolic reprogramming to oncogenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The most profound biochemical phenotype of cancer cells is their ability to metabolize glucose to lactate, even under aerobic conditions. This alternative metabolic circuitry is sufficient to support the biosynthetic and energy requirements for cancer ...

Anti-Diabetic Effects of an Ethanol Extract of Cassia Abbreviata Stem Bark on Diabetic Rats and Possible Mechanism of Its Action - Anti-diabetic Properties of Cassia abbreviata -

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacopuncture, 2017
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the hypoglycemic effects of an ethanol extract of Cassia abbreviata (ECA) bark and the possible mechanisms of its action in diabetic albino rats. Methods: ECA was prepared by soaking the powdered plant material in
